Here's a khuk I'd love to see

Start with a Dhankuta blade, but skip the magic stone finish. Give it a wooden handle and a simple scabbard, foregoing a karda and chakma. Call it a "House Khukuri", 'cause it'll no doubt see most of it's duty in the kitchen, garden, etc.

It's not a new model, just a variation on a theme. Nothing original on my part, since others, including Yvsa I believe, have mentioned they'd like to have a "dressed down" Dhankuta for similar reasons. I know I'd buy at least two, pretty sure others might be interested. What do y'all think?

I'd say keep the chakma, make it hard and long enough to really strop the edge. Put a tiny flap over it that tucks in, to make sure it doesn't hop out while tromping around.

Sarge you got that mixed up with the Kothimoda with the dui chiarra blade and about 18" oal.:)
The Dhankuta doesn't really do much for me. I have one setting right here next to the computer desk tarnishing to beat hell. :p

Oops:o Sorry for misquoting you Yvsa. I still like the idea of a 12" kitchen khuk somewhere between a 12" Siru and a 12" AK. Call it a mini BAS?

Besides, there's already the Birghorka ( BG ) marked line of villager types.

Hmmm - a line of thick fatbellied little 12, 13, 14 inchers...?

I've heard of those rare creatures, even got to handle some long enough to issue 'em out to my guys, but haven't seen many for sale as of late.:(

No problem Sarge, just goes to show you how much I talk on here, no doubt easy to be misquoted.:)

H.I. already makes something similar to what you want although I haven't seen one for sale for quite a while now.
The Khuk?
Why the little 12" to 13" balance model. I don't know if there are any old pix available or not but I beleieve you would really like it.
The Balance Model is very wasp waisted and true to its name will balance on its edge.
I have two of them, had another but gave it to my grand daughter, one of the remainder belongs to my Barbie.:D

A plain Kothimoda would be awesome. I bought a blem Kothimoda from Bill last year. It is one of my favorite blades. Looks, feel balance, speed, looks again! It has it all. I have been tempted to get a conventional sheath for it from Terry. It would handle work fine. The blade is as serviceable and as solid as any khuk I own. I have pleanty to use for hard use. This one sits ready to defend the bed. It sits in a drawer under my bed, waiting:cool:

Amen. I'd love to have a Bir Ghorka version of the little "bulldog villagers" that show up from time to time. Just make it full tang and make the handle long enough (about the length they use on a 16.5" khuk).

Until then Uncle, I wonder if you might have any 12" Sirupatis with wooden handles? That'd be close enough to my objective for me to tinker around and experiment with. Looks like we might be mark time march for another week so there's still time.

:( .....hmmmmm.....I know a female Staff Sergeant that has in her possession a particular 12" Siru I might be able to trade her out of. That would be hilarious, it was my first HI khuk, and though it's changed hands several times, it somehow always comes back to me.:D

Trade made, but it cost me dearly.:( ;)

That was a rough trade...did you scrub the poker face off in the shower or sumthin?:)

Top one is a sweetie. Who made it? I recognize the bottom one.

Top one is a "Troll" from Brusletto of Norway. Nice knife, Sandvik stainless blade, beautifully figured curly birch and German silver handle. The safety strap on the scabbard engages the stud on the pommel, a simple method of keeping the knife secure.

Bottom one is a Jarvenpaa utility puukko from Finland. 420 stainless blade, plain birch handle.

Me lose my poker face? Truth be known, I should never be a horse trader,'cause I have no interest in besting anyone in a deal. But pay attention, I got back my cherished little Siru, while at the same time unburdening myself of two stainless steel knives that hold little interest to me but will give her good service. Not too shabby for a simple country feller eh?;)

Sarge,

In spite of your somewhat low opinion of stainless, you know those are fine knives you traded away. They hold a wicked edge and are easy to sharpen.

No, not bad Sarge:)

It's a shame that almost all the Brusletto stuff is stainless, I really like some of their designs.

But I already learned to give the cheap red-handle Moras first to somebody that doesn't know carbon blades. Some folks want to put them back in the sheath wet "because I'm afraid to even have it out of the sheath, it's so sharp!" If they nick their finger, it goes back in the sheath bloody....

Eventuallly they will admit that they found some task that it did way better than their other knives though.

Dang, now I want a forged puuko...know where to find them other than Kellam or Brisa?

You got that right Joe, they're both excellent knives, and both sharp as surgical lasers, I wouldn't give junk to the lady in question, or any of the troops for that matter. This particular Staff Sergeant was my supply sergeant in Afghanistan. Never whined or complained the whole time and often worked above and beyond. When the A-10 squadron at Bagram found themselves temporarily without a supply troop, she cheerfully worked six hours a day supporting them, and six hours a day supporting my unit, and kept this up for several weeks until they got a replacement. When I talk about how proud I am of my "guys", y'all need to know I mean the gals too.:D

edited to add: Firkin, there was a fellow in Tennessee (Harju's Nordic Knifemaking Supplies) that had forged puukko blades, but I just checked his website and it comes up as a dead link. Kellam ain't bad, they're down in Florida, so maybe the duck can work you a deal.;)
