I polished this up a long time ago, before microtech used the CrN coating they use now (which is pretty good). It was some crappy bead blast/clear coat deal, it would soak up patches of water really bad, so anyhow, i polished it to a mirror finish (this was like 1 1/2 years ago), but I finally got a scan of it here, here it is:

Pretty nice, I am thinking of doing the same thing with my Emerson CQC7a.

Oh, by the way, do you know when microtech started to use the silver-whatever-coating? I have a mini-SOCOM, marked "10/98". I think it is the new coating, but I am not sure about it.

actually i think it was 10/98! I'm not 100% sure about this though. Try asking at www.microholics.com or the automatic forum here. Unless you've never seen the old coatings and the new coatings, you wouldn't know which is which, the new coating is VERY silver colored, the old coatings are darker, very bead blast looking.

OK, I see...
I am now comparing my beadblasted Emerson and my mini Socom, and the Emerson indeed looks grey as an elephant. The SOCOM shines silvery and bright

I love mirror polished knives... I'm seriously considering doing that to my Green L-UDT. Does anyone know if the aluminum handle will polish up?

Spark, I think the aluminum will be scratched quite easily if you remove the protective coating. It might look good, but you would have to re-polish it now and then.

So I'd probably have to reanodize it? Bummer...

My eyes!!!
Jiminy that's bright....

Maybe you can polish the handle in a zebra stripe pattern and then splash anodize it with some gold...like some kind of "anti-tactical" knife...

Spark, about polishing the handles. I don't know how easily the anodizing would polish off, but I think that you'd have to be careful since you'd have to start off with at least some kind of rough grit, and since aluminum is quite soft, you could risk deforming the handles....

WOW, that looks really nice! I may just want to try that procedure on my MA Socom. Too bad, MT won't sell any regular satin finished models, apart from those Brend pieces. My compliments Jadis!!

basically I sanded the blade starting at 180 grit, working my way up all the way to something like 6000 grit...lots of work.

Supposed to be able to remove anodizing with Oven Cleaner....

Haven't tried it but heard alot about people doing it...
