A guy at work is a fan of tacticals and I am a slip joint --all the way--guy. He was asking me if I knew what type of knife was the biggest seller in the country today--the tactical or the slip joint. Any ideas? I have no idea where to even start researching this.

Probably the slipjoint, there is a much bigger collector market and selection of slipjoints.

I dont see how tacticals could be in the same ball park as slip joints.

It boggles the mind to think about how many different slip joints there are.

Although I'm a SJ lover myself, I'll have to go against the grain here and say that the largest selling type of knife today is the chi-made one hand opener(includes all styles and varients). You just don't find that many slipjoints of any description for sale any more at retail outlets, let alone quality ones.

Take a look at the volume of offerings on ebay, the place is flooded with chi- knives to the point where they can hardly give them away at rock bottom prices.

I think it's the collector market that might swing it back to slipjoints though. Cheap china tacticals sell alot, but ever see anyone that owned 45 variations of the same China import?

what I see being carried in public are (in order of occurance)
1) lockback clipped to pocket
2) Vic classic on key ring

what I can't see is what's in a pocket.

A knife collector and a knife buyer are two different animals and I can only guess the buyers far out number the collectors. Although I have about 50 knives, more or less, I consider myself a buyer. I have no rhyme nor reason to my purchases. I'm in the market for a leg knife right now b/c I think the features are cool and not b/c it fills a niche in my collecton. Sorry for rambling. I'm wired on morning coffee.

I think the vic classic is the most carried knife in the world. They made literally millions of them a year, and I think I remember seeing it in one of the Knife rags in an article where it was the most confiscated knife at airports and courthouses.

Most people are not knife people, but I am constantly surprised at how many non-knife people have a classic on a key ring or in a purse, or someplace.

I'd have to guess SAKs. Even my Mom has one on her keys and she isn't a knife person at all she doesn't even have kitchen knives.

part of the ubiquitousness ( I had to use a dictionary for the spelling) is the fact that many businesses order a Vic classic with their company logo.
i.e. : American Legion Post 777
or McDribble Insurance Co. and give them out as Xmas presents.
Some guys on Ebay sell aiport confiscations, which leads to another topic!
