I really like this hunk of steel. Thanks to everyone who talked me out of trying to turn some I-beams into an anvil-like-object!

It is well used but definitely not used up. Please ignore the orangy looking hilights on top of it that came out in the photo, there is not a speck of rust in person. It rings beautifully, most of the face is flat out to the corners, and it even has a hardy hole and pritchel.

Looks good! One piece of advice I'll give you is that you should really, really attach that gorgeous hunk of steel to something VERY well. That ring may sound like music to your ears now, but I guarantee that after a couple of hours of forging you're a lot less likely to like it. The other benefit of really attaching it well to something heavy is that you'll chase it around a lot less if you're trying to move a lot of metal around.

Now, get something hot and hammer it! :)

Sure beats a hunk of I beam. Looks like it has holes in the feet. Put some lags inbetween the toes. I've got 3 anvils and my favorite is still my 120 pounder.

Thanks guys, it will soon be secured down tight and then the fun will begin.

I got VERY lucky finding this one. There is certainly one out there just waiting for you to find it so keep searching and talking with people.

Wrap some old logging chain a couple of times around her waist. That will suck most of the ring out of her. I also like to stick a large speaker magnet to the side to hold my "cutoff". I use a chunk of old worn out triangle file for a cutoff. Finish the cut and just push the file over the side of the anvil with your hammer. It will be right there on the magnet next time you need it. Won't have to chase it around the shop floor.
Nice anvil, now get to work.

CMD,
yours is way better than the one I just found (literally). I was wandering around my in-laws new spread and stubbed my toe on the base of an anvil, next to a tree. Weighs in at 63 lbs on the bathroom scale and found a leg vice (terminology? vice on a long leg or pin to floor - 35 lbs)

The is pretty narly looking. Is it possible to have a weld shop weld a chunk of hard plate on the face and goe from there?

(sorry to jack your thread - new and curious)
