Hey fellas - not sure if anyone is following my thread in the RAT forum but I modded the pommel of my RC3 with a notch that is used on the new Shango by TOPS. It works great but I need to figure out a way to get it to look a bit better.

Here is the videos using the notch. I like it!!!!

Here are some pics of the notch - it's almost complete I just need to figure out a way to clean it up a bit more.

Here are the rods I used.

Excellent, very cool

I think you owe Joezilla some royalty money though :D

LOL - I PM'd Joe to discuss. He mentioned that I call it the Shango notch to pay respects  I'm not going to be doing it for profit or anything like that. I just saw a good idea and decided to hack my RAT up a bit.

Saw your post in the RAT forum and have been thinking about doing something like this as well :D

It would look a lot better on a knife with no coating but it just feels right on my RC3 since this is really my work horse blade. I love the fact that I can use it with the sheath still on.

Nice job on the notch! Looks like it works good.
When you go to strike the firesteel, try reversing the action (pull the firesteel towards you/hold blade in place over shavings)you did in the first video. See how it works. Might be easier to control and not disturb the mag shavings if they are on tinder. Not sure it will work with that setup though.

Good advice - Admittedly it was a bit easier to get it lit in a controlled environment (garage) on a solid floor. The realy test will come when I am outside messing around with it. It's supposed to rain all weekend here so it'll be a bit hard to get out especially since my wife is working all weekend and I have myright jr. all to myself.

thanks again for the advice.

Great idea from Joe, and really nice job on the RC-3.
I thing Shango is going to be showing up widely! :)

That Joe is a smart fella - I'd love to spend the weekend in the woods with him learning some of the skills he has.

Let us know how it works. I'm curious to see if it does.

Great idea. The Shango notch may be this year's hottest W&SS mod!

Take note, makers - the first one to come up with a bushcraft design that incorporates a bottle opener (Becker Necker style) and a Modzilla Shango Notch (tm?) will surely reap the benefits! After all, as a market demographic, we tend to like knives, beer, and fire-starting.

Mike Fuller of TOPS and I accept Beers for use of the "Shango Notch" in lew of royalties. :D

PS: I tried to incorperate a bottle opener but it was too much
Post PS: The notch will open beer bottles with leaverage
Post double PS: So will the back of ANY knife spine almost, but the danger increases with the amount of alcohol.

very cool.. i think that came out great.. i am really like the Shango (notch)..:)

I'm sure Joe will also take, mead and wine in trade too.

Hanging out with Joe is awesome, because basically any type of bug/animal you see, he can tell you exactly what it is, what it eats, how many times a day it poops, etc. Plus, he's just a -really- nice guy.
