Here's something for the newer folder makers.

I was looking through my knife drawings I have on my computer and found this lock back drawing. It's a pattern I doubt I'll ever make but it's still a pretty nice little knife. I thought maybe some of the newer folder makers might want to use the pattern to get them started in folders. I know lock backs are tougher to make than liner locks but at least you have a working drawing here. It wouldn't take much to convert it to a liner lock.
You can cut and paste the pic into your own photo program and make it any size you want.

Hey L6,
Thanks buddy. It won't be my first, but I'll bring that one to life.Looks like a good solid design.I'll make sure and post some pics when it's done.Should'nt take to long. Thanks again.

Yeah, thanks....

Got a question for ya... I am buying a mill this week... what do I need to use it as a surface grinder for small parts for folders..... "Miking" and adjusting pressure on the flat platen is for the birds...

Thanks again...

btw, I only made two folders.... lockback worked well and tight.. didnt do so hot on the liner lock.....LOL...

thanks again,

Daniel

Hey Daniel,What kind of mill are you getting? If its an HF or one of the mill/drill machines ( I have a jet and like it alot ) the first thing I would order would be a good vice.Enco has a clone of a kurt anglelock vice ( the 5 "is about 150.00 ish ) , most mils;mill/drills come with an el cheapo vice that I moved to my drill press, not mill material IMO.They also come with a face mill that uses carbide tipped lathe type tools that works but I would buy some type of insert replaceable e-mill (one that uses TGP type inserts can be had relativly cheap ,;about 80.00 for a 1 1/4" -2 insert e-mill ) Enco again.Thats about it.Oh yea, a good set of parallels is a must too.Does your mill have an R8 spindle? That will open up tooling opertunitys for you too.If it does ,make sure you get an insert type e-mill that has an R-8 shank.Maybe you know all of this already,if so ,didn't mean to bore you.Any more machining questions?Don't be afraid to ask!!!E-mail me if you need to.Sorry guys to get OT here.

I haven't had any luck using my mill in a surface grinder type job. If you start out with precision ground steel you won't need to. The best thing you can have for folder making is a slow turning horizontal disc sander. Since I built mine I don't have any problems keeping things flat or cleaning them up. I get real smooth operating folders now thanks to that sander.

I guess I should have mentioned "part 2".What I was or should have clarified was that I am using the mill to bring material to within .001 - .002 of finish size and using a 800-1200 grit paper on my surface plate to get toolmarks out and bring to finish size.Using the mill to get the given material as "flat & parallel" as possible only.It just saves having to remove more material by hand on my surface plate , which can be slow . But at the same time effective for mantaining a flat and parallel part.Like Daniel said, doing that job on the vertical platen of my KMG is a pain to try and maintain "flat and parallel"parts. I have been considering a horizontal sander like you have L6.Do you have something like Rob from Beumont sells?I have seen flat plates and concave plates being sold,I assume you are using the flat one eh? What kind of RPM , and are you using a model that uses an under the table type motor mount?

Thanks guys.. the HF model with 4/5 hp motor.... I read about the difference between the face mill and the fly cutter.... the fly cutter is more recommended for surfacing the stock.... it shears other than grinds like the other.. The finish is the problem... but getting it close is just miking and taking your time... Since I have a Variable speed belt grinder.... I will take it very slow..... I have thought about a disc grinder... and have another variable speed motor and controller for it... just not needed yet.... I have a flat platen that will be getting a new ceramic platen this week. The rotary platen is sweet...... I am looking at magnetic bases for surface grinders to put on the mill.... they should work to hold it still....

I had the problems with my grinder before the variable speed.... step pulleys did not work well... and the single phase motor would not keep consistent and that would vary my tension... but my 3 phase 3 hp motor... hell, I cannot throw an engine block on it to slow it down....LOL....LOL... if it is good for an escallator,,,,,, then good enough for me..... LOL....

Besides, it was the medication for my ADD that slowed me down to even to folders now.... before I could not be patient enough to do it....

Daniel
