Amazon now lets you "search inside the book" for key words. A search for "Spyderco" turned up a bunch of outdoor sports and self-defense books, but also a handful of novels. It's interesting to see what kinds of authors are interested in Spydies. (The search will bring up a few lines from the book to put the keyword in context, but if you "register" you can see the whole page--if you've ever ordered from Amazon, you're probably already registered) Should simplify the "Spydie spotting" posts, huh? :D

Buncha surprises...

Most unexpected genre: Nancy Bartholomew aparently writes a women's softcore mystery series starring a stripper who habitually carries an unnamed Spyderco for SD purposes.

Most bizzarre: See the excerpt from "Samurai Cat goes to Hell". Very, very strange.

Surprisingly entertaining: "A Kiss of Shadows" by Laura K. Hamilton. Author of the "Anita Blake: vampire hunter" series. "A Kiss of Shadows introduces Merry Gentry, a.k.a. Meredith NicEssus, a faerie princess of the Unseelie Court, where politics is a blood sport. Merry, who's part sidhe (elvish), part brownie, and part human, never really fit in. She's short, not skilled in offensive magic, and mortal because of her human blood. These are real liabilities when your family, especially aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, is out to kill you. "
I know, I know; I'm rolling my eyes, too. But the book goes into surprisingly specific details about the main character's gear, down to mentioning that she carries a Millie (which for some reason they describe as having a 6" blade...) and a Delica.

...

Looks like a really interesting tool. Now if they could only work out an engine that searches movies... ;)

and in W. Gibson "american acropolis" he describe a sharpmaker 204 of the future ,directly installed on an old wood table..
he didnt named it, but the description is precise..

would be intersting compiling a list of spydies citation in literature and movies.

thanks Grover, regards

>and in W. Gibson "american acropolis" he describe a sharpmaker 204 of the future

D'you know if that's been released outside of Italy? Nobody here in the States seems to have heard of it.

BTW, in another cyberpunk novel (Snow Crash?) the author describes a "knife with an opening hole in the blade", but never actually says "Spyderco". So there's obviously a whole lot more references out there. I still think search-inside-the-book is a neat tool, though :D

well, in fact is an old one, the usa edition is from 1999 ,and original title is "all tomorrow's parties" , so i gave you a wrong info -about the book's title-
..btw, i was a fan of first gibson, but his last books left me "cold"..

uhm, i've read snow crash, but was before my addiction to knives, so i didnt pay attention..
anyway ,spydies are part of our culture, and icons of modernity, style and function, so i think we'll see more citations in several media..and not only for negative figures.

and thanks, the amazon feature is funny indeed
