Here's what not to do....

An interesting article, but regrettably, the same old story. Same stuff happens on the woods roads around here (Maine) a few times every year.

The same happens here in California. About 40 miles down the road from me is a beautiful area full of Redwood trees, a cool running river and sandy beaches, where camping and hiking is very popular. Yet, every year a few go missing in the mtns. just above this very beautiful area and are either found dead from dehydration, this with fresh water springs bubbling all over the mtn. (also heavy metal springs), or they wander further inland into some of the most rugged terrain to be found and either fall to their deaths or break a leg and become lion food, or just plain go missing. Never to be seen again.

The ill prepared and inexperienced really don't stand much of a chance. Even in paradise.

Yep - the weird thing is, as harsh as that country looks it's quite survivable.

Actually the link to the article only shows a stock image which looks like it's from central Oz.

If you go to the front page of news.com.au itself you can see a flash show of the actual country they were lost in. Typical of the inland areas of west oz. Not that difficult a country to survive in if you have the right information.

WTF???

...their dilapidated Land-Rover broke down.
...after setting out without enough petrol and water.
They had failed to tell anybody of their plans...
They also set off without a map...

Did they do ANYTHING right?? I'm not sure I sympathize. I'm sorry they died, but ....

The latest information coming out is that they were both bi-polar wich may explain some of their decisions.

The other aspect to this is there refusal to listen to local advice as they were told by people at one of the aboriginal commuities they stopped at that they didn't have enough water.

I have seen this attitude manifest a few times in my life, particularly the combination of inexperienced people with an off road vehicle. There is some sort of link between a man's self esteem and his image of a bushman in our culture - so when a local offers some advice I've often seen people totally ignore it and plough on.

A few years ago a bloke drowned his two kids when he ignored locals telling him not to try a river crossing in our South West.

That's always a good plan, ignore the local Aboriginies. They've only occupied the place for the last 60,000 years, what the hell would they know about the conditions!

Reminds me of a story.

Years ago, when EPROM modules or black boxes first started appearing in cars & trucks, legend had it that a group of enterprising GM engineers set some of them up as cockpit voice recorders & black box combos.

Well, a bunch wound up in 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4 trucks. The engineers tracked a bunch of them down trying to explain a large number of fatalities in Texas.

After recovering the boxes and downloading the contents, the common denominator in the cases seemed to be cockpit conversations that went something like this:

"Bubba, hold my beer, and watch THIS ****!"

Sad story :(

I think the kicker would be if they found lots of big survival knives in the Land Rover :p

I feel for the dog the most as he trusted his retarded owner to keep him safe and they killed him. Gotta love dogs, mans best friend to the end when he could of ran off in search of water himself.

I much prefer dogs to people they are masters of the universe and allow us to be owned by them. :(

Skam
