Yes, I've been a contented knife knut ever since I bought my baby Sebenza. I hardly look at other folders (unless we are talking Opinels, which are a whole 'nother kettle of fish), but...I would love to see an industrial strength Sebenza. What, you might ask, is this bozo talking about? Very simple. A Sebenza with a flat or convex-ground blade. The elegant Jeep becomes a Tank! Replace the Sebenza? No way! I'm just suggesting another model.

Interesting! The other day I was thinking if that would be possible with one of the fixed blades, flat ground that is.

Again, nothing wrong with the existing line, but as a nice addition, I really would like to see a flat ground fixed knife with a wider blade. Maybe something like the Ubejane, but the blade longer and without the upswept spine.

The Sebenza is IMHO strong and big enough. I own a Buck Strider and must say that it is overbuild for a folder. It's too big and heavy for every day carrying. If you need something that big, it's easier to refer to a fixed blade.

Actually, I'd love to see a flat-ground sebenza as well.

Flat ground eh? Just might work...

How about Boran gas reinforced titainium scales as well? CPM 420V blade and oh... a toothpick in the handle? Tweezers as well space permiting.

I think it's "may the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits".

Oh, you may mock, but you just wait until they take my advice and make one with a built-in flashlight, just like that one by.. uh.. Something Eagle? We'll see who's laughing then! well, probably still you..

You can flat grind the edge in a few minutes, but changing the primary grind from hollow to flat would take much longer. It is possible though however you would be left with a very thin blade as the hollow grind on Sebenzas is deep.

On going for a stronger blade grind, is the folder stable enough under lateral forces to support it? If you take a current hollow ground Sebenza and vice it sideways does the blade break or does the folder simply come apart?

Anne,

After reading Chris's comments on blade grinds in the recent issue of Blade, I'm not holding out much hope for a flat-ground sebenza.

Can you summarize what he said? I don't get Blade.

I too would LOVE to see a flat ground version of the SEB. Slightly thinner stock, and maybe thinner handles, but not necessarily (you could get toothpick, and tweezers in the large).

But you also implied you had only the small (?) you said "baby" sebenza. I think the overall engineering, and esp. the strength of the seb is much better appreciated in the large version.

Matthew,
Here's a couple quotes from Chris. "I believe a hollow grind is the best way to achieve a flat cutting edge while still leaving a thick blade spine."

"On the folding knife, my choice would be to go with a concave grind, because you get both back-ridge thickness and an efficient cutting edge."

Soooooo...I would be kinda surprised if he cranked out some flat ground folders.

Thanks Hoodoo! Found my way back here after all! Of course this answer begs the question. One of the *advantages* of the flat grind is that you don't need such a thick spine to achieve equivalent lateral blade strength.

That being said, of course he's right in that if you take a thick spine for granted, you get a finer edge with a high hollow grind.
