Today I met up with some forum members (Md 25v, the Mrs. Md 25v, and Acutus) for a jaunt into the Shenandoah in search of Herps. Unfortunately, the real text will have to come later. I need to shower and do a tick check as soon as my pictures are done uploading. However, in the meantime suffice to say that I had an excellent time and enjoyed meeting everyone immensely. Thank you for coming out to play.

Please enjoy the pictures.

Whats a herp?

Think turtle. That's honestly all I can tell you. We went looking for turtles, salamanders, skinks, snakes, frogs, etc.

*Edit: It might just be the umbrella family of reptiles and amphibians.

I think its short for

herpetology

her·pe·tol·o·gy

–noun
the branch of zoology dealing with reptiles and amphibians.

Whats a herp?

Herp= short for herptiles, meaning reptiles and amphibians

Great pics Eric, especially that woodsman shot by the flowing water!
I don't know what those "coral" looking fungi were but they were as spongy as rubber. We all had a great time today and can't wait to go back to Shanendoa when my hip is better. Here are some Herp shots from today. Just a couple salamanders this time.

Dusky Salamander- Desmognathus fuscus

Baby Redback Salamander- Plethodon cinereus

Mud Salamander- Pseudotriton montanus

There was almost a nice yellow Long-tailed Salamander but he went down a hole and when I stuck my fingers in to get him OWWWW! This is what I got instead, much to everyone's amusement.

There were also a ton of millipedes out today.

And two stick bugs

The stream we followed was absolutely beautiful. There were NO SOUNDS! other than the birds and babbling brooks. The water was clear and tasted great after filtration.

You must have caught me on a landing in that picture. I look like I'm about to do a backflip...

I actually tried to get you on the rock above but you moved faster than my shutter button finger :D

Great thread. I am a herp enthusiast as well. My buddy knows all the stops in So Cal. The wheres and the whens. That is most critical for snakes at least.

Hey Finally made it to the thread! Couldn't find it cause I forgot your Forum name Eric. :D BTW, it's Acutus not the Shootist :)

Sure was a scenic hike for sure. That last leg though was toooooo steep. :D We definitely have to get together again.
