Ok I'm new to custom knives!
On another forum this nice looking Hess Tiburon came up for grabs.
$40.00 shipped.....how could I refuse??

I don't see a lot around about these guys.....are they very well known?
I see they have only been around since 2005.

Anyone else have some input on this??

It's been a safe queen and never used or sharpened.

This one sentence tells most of the story here.

I think you got a SMOKIN' deal on the secondary market. Not sure what they would charge, however their website doesn't help much.

Until your thread I've never even heard of them. Obviously, they cater to working knives.

So the silence is testimony to the hands-on input. Not much, I'm seeing.

Rest assured you have a solid working knife made well at a great deal.

OK I think I have the correct information. When Case knives bought out Marble arms they shipped all of the work to China. A lot of the craftsman from Marble Arms ended up opening up their own custom knife shops like Rapid River knives. I am pretty positive this is the story with Hess knives. Getting one for $40 is a steal!! Like I said I am 99% positive of what I have told you if I am wrong I am sorry. I believe they are made over in the Western U.P. of Mi.

Just checked and I am correct. They are made in Gladstone, Michigan the same town that Marble Arms was originally made in.

Thanx BigCountry!
It is a sweet knife and it's a work of art.
You aren't the only one that thought I got a great deal for $40.

Coop.....
Dunno what to say.....
From what I'm being told if you have heard of Marbles company then you had to of heard of Hess and the Hess family.
Seeing as how 2-3 of the Hess family worked for Marbles for years.
So if you have never heard of Marbles or Hess......

I'm new to custom knives so I'm trying to learn about different USA handmade knives.
Never know when another deal might happen along!!

You give me too much credit. This assumes I have paid attention and have an understanding of the Marbles Knife Company... Of which I have NO knowledge, as they were a production company. LOL!

Thanks for clarifying what's going on here!

A couple others that are made here in the U.P. of Michigan. Rapid river Knife Works and Bark river Knives which are what you would call semi Custom knives. Mike Stewart who ran Marbles Arms runs Bark River Knives and they have a huge following. I am waiting to get a good deal on an original Marble that was made in Gladstone. Makes me sick because I live just under 100 miles from the old shop and use to go in there when ever we went to Escanaba and never picked one up. Was always going to but put it off.

I know that sucks when ya take for granted that place has been around a long time and they will continue as such.
Then when they are gone and you had a chance to get their product cheap....then it's worth a small fortune......
One tends to kick themselves in the proverbial ass....
It's happened to me a few times in my 48yrs.....causes you to say some bad words!!

Since these don't seem to be actual custom knives, I'm going to move this to General Knife Discussion.

I'm fairly certain that Great Esatern Cutlery makes some of the blades for them. Might want to check over in the traditional forum. Someone over there probably knows more about the company.

I had a Hess pioneer, very well made indeed, great super sharp steel. Sold it off though, used for more than $40!

I believe also Hess once worked for Marbles knife co. at one time. He Makes some nice looking knives.
