so a little while back I picked a tiburon with the stacked leather handle and the aluminum pommel. I mentioned I would post a thread about it since there isn't much information on this company. Anyone who owns a Hess, feel free to join in on your feelings of the knife.
Overall the blades fit and finish was almost perfect. There was a couple of things I wasn't happy with(some I have changed) first the blade looked to new but an apple or two took care of that. Second, at the base of the blade right where the ricasso meets the sharpened edge, there was a "ledge" that was unsharpened and the little piece of blade would catch on stuff while cutting. Also a few millimeters in front of that it looked like it was held a little to long on the grinder in that one spot. So I ground that area down until now it is sharpened all the way to the ricasso with no little ledge to get caught on. Other than those little things there was no other flaws with it, and some people may not call those flaws. Photos will come soon, it is a little hard to understand without seeing it.
The handle fits nicely in my hand. I wear a medium sized glove, but have longish fingers and I don't have a problem with the knife in terms of hot spots or it being to small in any direction. It is easy to handle, and quick feeling in the hand. Being 1095 it is easily sharpened and cared for. The blade blanks are made by GEC. I personally will recommend anyone a knife from Hess if they mention they are looking at a new knife, and so far that's been about 15 people. I don't do that with most other company's.
There is a variety of handle options you can get. I went with stacked leather because I like the feel of it as well as the looks but there is also stag, different wood burls and so fourth.
The sheaths on these Knives are kindy flimsy. I personally didn't like it. The sheath has a retaining strap on it, but with it in place the knife could still rattle around a bit, the belt loop made the knife hang down really low also. I like having the knife high and tight on my hip. Also, whay I really didn't like was the fact the belt loop was only held on by two rivets, one on top one on bottom. It allowed the knife to rotate and swing back and fourth and I just could not stand that. So I made my own sheath out of 7-8 ounce Herman Oak leather and it solved the problems with the sheath.
Feel free to add anything on your thoughts about Hess Knife Works, there isn't much info out there.
