I recently picked up a DPX HEST Assault II in Sleipner steel. I've had the ESEE version for years and love it. The quality of this one seems awesome:thumbup:. I didn't know anything about the steel, so I did some research. The info/specs seems great, but I was blown away by the testing done on the KR Legion. It was on another forum and consisted of some major abuse and the knife held up very well. Both the HEST and Legion are made of Sleipner, but are they heat treated, etc. the same? Also, how does this steel seem to hold up over the long term? As it's been compared, at times, to D2, I was concerned with chipping. Thanks for any help. Take care.

Thanks Molleta! I assumed, and was hoping, they were the same steel. It's very impressive and seems perfect for a hard use knife. I checked the link, but it's in Italian, so I couldn't read it. Are you the one who did the Legion testing thread? Thanks again for your help. Take care.

Sorry only italian.
Sleipner of knife research have austenitic grane at ASTM 11.1 a very high value for an very high quality of heat treating .
Usually good knives are ASTM 8.

The one that did test is Tommy. Owner of Knife Research.
Yuo can see other test on his you tube channel.

RamZar, Thanks for the translation help. I love the HEST design and the Sleipner steel sounds awesome. The only problem is I now find myself wanting a Legion as well:D Take care.

One question regarding Sleipner steel.
You've claimed in the past it was pretty tough steel yet if you look at the steel comparison in the Sleipner factsheet it doesn't seem much tougher than Rigor (AISI A2) or Arne (AISI O1).

Now I don't call anyone a liar or anything. I've used the Legion without any problem and reviews seem to show it's pretty tough but how do you explain the difference with the factsheet?

The sleipner with a very quality heat treating with an austenitic grane at ASTM 11.1 give us toughness value similar the usual value gived to A2.
The values given by datasheet represent a value more or less accessible and which can also be exceeded. The A2 with the same treatment that was made at the KR sleipner would give better values than those published in the datasheed .
Normally in datasheet, toughness and others are related to an austenitic grade ASTM9 a value that is already difficult to reach.

Alright, thanks
just another question: how is the heat treatment different (guess it's no secret anyway).

I checked with DPx Gear and they said that only the first run of HEST Assault II has Sleipner. That's the one that comes with the Zippo lighter. The other HEST Assault II knives have Niolox. This is actually contrary to what online dealers show and they mostly say (apparently incorrectly) that it's Sleipner: BladeHQ, KnifeCenter, etc.

Was there any info on that data sheet about its resistance to corrosion? I looked but didn't see anything and that's all I'm worried about.
