I went for a three hour woods walk yesterday. Since this park has posted rules against carrying knives, a silly idea, I only carried small knives with me that could be out of sight. I had hoped to find some good fat lighter or at least some sappy heart pine for fire starting.

No good on this one. An axe or machete would be better.
This freshly blown down pine looked promising. There was one chunk I pried on for quite a while, but I just could not break it lose. I just couldn't get much leverage with the short knife. I could chip out small pieces, though, which would suffice in an emergency. Next trip, I'm taking the Junglas. One whack and I'll have plenty of fat lighter. Probably scare heck out of the sheeple on the trail if they see that big knife.

The HEST is a fine little tool, and a lot better than nothing, but it's hard to beat a machete or big blade for getting things done with minimum effort.

I have carried my ESEE-6 down there before, and my folding CS Kukri. No guns are allowed either, but you know the Horn Dog was packing. Needles to say, I stay away from air travel these days. I am too old to put up with all the modern foolishness.

i found myself in a similar situation, i had an F1 with me, and i just couldn't even try to hack one single big log i found , well, finally, i gathered some small branches, i've split some of them with the F1, and started the fire, but from that day on, i always keep a fiskars hatchet in my backpack, that is of course if i go in some forest :D
i guess a junglas or a rc5 would do the same job, and look even better
anyway, the HEST is one cool knife, wouldn't you agree ?

Absolutely. It is a very useful survival tool. I like my HEST a lot and have ordered the folding model. There are many things that can be done with smaller knives, but splitting out hard pine heart wood is easier with a bigger blade. I may go back out there soon with the RC-5. That little brute should do fine, and it is easier to conceal than the big Junglas.

Best rules ever. I guess it's one of those genius rules like "Anyone who jumps out of an airplane without a parachute will be fined"

Yeah. But since I pay the local property taxes that support this park, I intend to enjoy it. Check out this insane sign at the campground entrance.

If a wooded area is big enough to walk in for three hours it would make more sense if carrying a knife was mandatory instead of prohibited.

You know, if you're going to break the rules at least do it with good beer. I wouldn't feed that to my dog. Well maybe, it would be fun to watch.:D

It is probably just my optimistic side speaking, but I would bet that those rules are enforced to the point that many of us would think is necessary. At least that seems to be the way they are enforced around here. i.e. Enforcement does not seem to hassle those that do not hassle others...but the clown(s) that EVERYONE on the property takes notice of (and has to clean up after) is/are dealt with accordingly.

I guess it is not against the law to misspell words on legal postings.

Looks like you broke one law once, another one twice and probably a third one shortly after finishing that beer.

One of the parks around here has a sign outside similar to that, except it says cutting implements instead of listing the several items. Really silly, especially when in the summer the trails are covered with greens.

You can be sure that I did not litter or damage any property or harm any wildlife. These are not "Laws". They are idiotic rules made up by overpaid bureaucrats who have nothing better to do. The new Georgia code allows for concealed carry in all parks in the State. As for the Big Budweiser, well it just fit my Maxpedition pouch perfectly, and I picked it up at convenience store. I would have preferred a Bass Ale. Usually, I just bring water. In any case, I'm a big boy and can handle one beer without getting drunk and causing problems. The local Taliban must have put that rule in. The prohibitions against damaging the vegetation or bothering the wildlife are reasonable enough, although I do occasionally clear the sticker vines and palmettos from the trails, as do the workers there. The focus should be on behavior, not "things". As it is, many of the stupid rules are not enforced at all. I have led a one man campaign to get the rules changed, but most people around here seem to like them. I prefer freedom and responsibilty. I will continue to excercise my rights as an adult, tax paying citizen. Rant off.

i thought that was his lunch, that stuff is like hamburger helper in a can. :D

I can't believe there would b rules like that in a park?!?! I live in California, home of the tree huggers, and we can carry any knives, axes, and what not into our parks no matter the size. It's funny though, people think Cali is all Liberals but most of the state is pretty Conservative except for SF, North West coast line, and LA. If you go camping / fishing up in the hills or mountains on state land it's very common to see most people with firearms. One reason is the mountain lions and the bears so you need to be able to protect yourself. I see people all the time camping with their family and they'll set up bottles and cans to let the kids shoot. Yosemite would be the only place I can think of that guns wouldn't fly.

I say you take who ever made those rules and plop them into the middle of that park in there suits and tell them to meet you back at the trail head. :jerkit:

Shame what this world is coming to :barf:

This country needs more men like you.

Yes indeed, I hope so too.

If the sign had read something like "Anyone causing damage, endangering others, or being drunk and disorderly will be ejected from the park."

I think it would be much better and more to the point.

Exactly my point, but you said it better. I was all set to return there today with the RC-5 to harvest that fatlighter, but then the daily teenage daughter crisis intervened. Oh well, that's what old daddys are for. I should have known that 45 was too old to be fathering kids. Just one left to raise!

HD, I carry a Keltec also, (IMO) they are great, reliable, cheap & highly concealable pocket pistols. My PF9 and RC4 are a great combo for hiking!
