Ok so I have been carrying the HEST daily since I got it, (couple months now I think) and I love it it's perfect excepts for one thing. The prybar point is killing my shirts! I love the prybar feature and probably use it as much if not more then the blade, but I gotta figure something out or I will have to consider changing to a 3 or 4 for EDC.

For me the best location of carry is horizontally on my belt, between the belt loops at 10 & 11 o'clock slid all the way over so that the handle tip (prybar) is right about 12 o'clock. This is with the blade and prybar facing down.

This conceals very well under my shirts, and I have really gotten a knack for retrieving and re-sheathing it extremely fast and effortlessly! I can't imagine it being in a better place! BUT the prybar tip is chewing holes in my shirts! Nice perfectly centered little nips!

I won't grind the prybar down as I LOVE this feature of the knife, I use it all the time. But I gotta come up with something.

I really don't care for the blade thickness, or actually thin-ness, of the ESEE-3. The ESEE-4 just seems a bit too long to conceal well, not too mention I think would put me over the legal limit on carry but I would have to double check that.

Any suggestions on what to do about this?? I LOVE the hest and its perfect, but my wife is getting pissed about my shirts lol!

Would an aftermarket sheath help with snugging the prybar tip up closer to keep it from biting my clothes?

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

i would try it vertical for a while and see if that helps, with it horizontal and at your back evertime you sit and lean back your shirts are getting caught on the prybar.

take it easy

I used the belt clip from my 5 and it protects everything from the prybar - bolts right up and is available separately from ESEE.

Another option is to make a minisheath for the prybar - could be some leftover material or something with a little cord through the lashing holes - kind of like a blade cover on a hatchet.

I haven't pulled the trigger on geting a H.E.S.T. yet, but it's next on my list. I've wondered about that prybar catching on stuf during normal carry, or raking your hand/arm against it. Bound to happen..

Seems like you could come up with a cap for the prybar end made out of Kydex, similar to a cap on a ballpoint pen, but if done right (at least in my warped mind) the prybar would both keep it from rotating and retain it. Let us know what you come up with.

Here is an option. I carried my RC3 horizontal attached to the MOLLE getup on the small of my back for the better part of two seasons of landscaping. Never had an issue, comfortable even when driving a very uncomfortable work truck. With an untucked t-shirt it is out of sight (out of mind). The HEST isn't a perfect fit, but it is certainly workable, and the elastic covers the prybar nicely. Although I must add I have not carried the HEST in this setup and I don't know if the prybar will put a hole in the elastic.

I carry mine in-pocket so it never touches my shirts. Never had an issue with it getting caught in my pocket on the draw, either.

I was wondering if the molle back could be made to fit the hest sheath - but the "jump proof" elastic over the prybar was the direction my thoughts went, too.

You have to change positions to see if that helps, rig a cover, or ditch the knife..

if you use the prybar more then the knife I doubt you're gonna wanna ditch it, I EDC mine vertically at 3 o'clock.. no problems here..

do you use the molle's?? or other sheath attachments.. if the knife sticks out to far another fail..

nice knife, (except the wire breaker:o)

tarditi would you mind posting a pic or two of this?
I would like to see how it goes together.
I have a HEST on the way and like this idea.
TIA.

I've carried my HEST many ways for many days,I normally edc two or three ESEE's at a
time.after poking a hole in my car seat gouging my hand & putting a couple of holes in shirts.HEST goes in front right pocket and no problems!

Some good ideas here! I think about the best course of action for now would be to rig up some kind of cap for it and try that! I really like the kydex idea, but I have no way of doing it myself. Can anyone recommend me to someone who could do something like that? I do really like that idea the best! It could slip over the point, then around the back, and use the lashing holes for the indention in the kydex to "click" into to keep it on!

I do carry it horizontally on the belt, vertical won't work for me as I am a "festively plump" kinda guy. I'd much rather have the prybar eat my shirts then gut me! Plus I really REALLY like the way it carries setup like I have it now. Super fast to retrieve and re-sheath. I have tried carrying it other ways and just can't get any to work any better. It's too big for pocket carry for me as I usually have a ton of crap in my pockets all the time.

Again I do really like the capping it approach. If anyone does kydex work and would like to give it a try I would gladly give you a few bucks if it worked out!!

Just to clarify here is a pic of how it's carried on my belt. I am using the stock sheath it came with and the paracord & cord lock. And no believe it or not, the prybar never tears up my pants or pokes me in the junk even though it looks like it would. Just eats my shirts!

You could take a ranger band or a fat rubber band and just slip it over the prybar until you need it.

Sorry - I did have to drill a hole, but the plate fits up nicely. The knife rides low enough now that it doesn't snag on anything.

Thought I would bump this back up.

I went the plasti-dip tool handle coating route, and it works real well!

I have pics but don't have the camera available at the moment. I will post them tomorrow!

I found that BB's would fill the lashing holes in the handle pretty well, also used a tiny scrap of paper to help secure them for the dipping. This let me get the material in the holes to help secure the cap and keep it solid, but kept it from locking the cap on. Then I took an x-acto knife to trim away the extra. It holds really tight, but comes off quick and no more torn shirts! Hopefully it won't fall off eventually but if it does I got ton of the stuff left!

well cool. glad you found a way to make it work. pics would be cool too.
plasti-dip can be awesome on certain tools.

No problems for me - same carry position as yours - but it'd be cool to see what you did.

How about a just placing a couple of wraps of tape one pry tip? It will blunt the tip and could be useful if you find yourself needing tape. It is also a little more easy to replace that the plasti-dip.
