I went hiking 2 days ago and i took my new HEST with me and some things really bothered me. First i have to say, no problem with the blade at all i love it. Its the sheath im a little annoyed with. I put the belt clips (or whatever they are called) on it and it seemed that no matter how loose i put them, it made the blade almost impossible to pull out. What is another option for the hest? Also i was poked by the pry bar in almost every position i put the knife in. I ended up just throwing it in my bag and pulling out my IZULA. Also how would you clean the micarta, because it is nasty and starting to smell :D

Mine either rides on my pack strap on or my belt on the right side in a reverse grip position. Both ways I use cord and cord lock.

That's one of the things keeping me from getting a HEST. Knife designers, listen to this: The ONLY sharp edge on a knife should be the cutting edge. This applies to "skull crusher" tangs and other useless "features" that just create hotspots and points where there shouldn't be points.

It's a simple fix though. Just grind it off if you like the knife and that one thing bothers you.

IMHO, I would have a custom Kydex made for the HEST or any knife for that matter. there are some great sheath makers here on BF.

I believe soap and water is the way to clean the Micarta. I removed them and clean them in the sink with just dish soap and warm water and then allow them to air dry. worked great for me.

Use regular soap and water to clean your micarta scales. I'm not sure as to what you are refering to as belt clips? There are the molle locks for the back to attach it to a pack, vest, or bag with molle webbing. They though have nothing to do with now tight the kydex grips the knife. The top screw on the kydex sheath is adjustable thus allowing you to contol the grip. You more than likely have then screw tightened all the way making it impossible to pull the blade out, loosen it up and you'll be good to go!

Any looser and it wouldnt stay attached. OH and by the way seriously THIS KNIFE KICKS A$$! I think everyone should have one, Its great in my front pocket, i just wish i could attach it somewhere else without that pry bar scratching me.

Amen. The Tek-Lok fits fine AND it holds the sheath and knife just a little bit farther off my fat gut so I don't get poked by it.

I think the instructions even mention, don't attach the clips to the top position. Move the screw down one hole. Then it won't pinch the sheath closed too tight.

Ya know what happens to a knife in a loose sheath, though? ... oops ... hey where's my knife ... :foot:

Anyway, what I do now is dummy cord the sheath to my belt and slip it in a back pocket, or just carry it in my pack altogether.

this is how i like to carry my IZULA wile hiking and i wanted to replace it with the HEST

With my Esee knives I use the boot clip to hook it to my front pocket and carry it that way. I've never used the molle clips.

IMO the molle locks are best for what they were intended for which is rigging the knife to molle gear. They are not a good option for belt carry. Just my .02 of course. YMMV.

If you hate the pry bar that much, grind it off or have it ground off and problem solved.

you know no one reads the instruction sheet :D
I use a tek loc on my HEST w/o issues.
Dawn dish soap works great

:mad::mad::mad::grumpy: Great way to ruin a good time.

+1 cord & lock or knot. I usually I usually tie a knot in the cord after fishing it through the holes, those cord locks make me nervous. Personally I find Tek-Loks to be too chunky for me. Either way I do not want to end up being the guy in the picture Esav painted.

Enjoy the sheath retention while you can, as you use it it will get to the point where the only good the sheath does is rattle as a multitask bear bell... I'm ditching it as soon as I can for a leather sheath... martin's drop Izula sheath looks pretty awesome, would be a great choice for in-pocket carry-which, by the way, is the best way I've found to wear the HEST-I don't even notice it's there. I do keep the sheath wrapped in a square pattern through the tek-lok holes for belt-mounting, it does work on a 2 inch belt. Easier, cheaper, more low profile than the tek-lok solution.

bar keepers friend mixed as a paste with a drop of bleach and water. scrub with a stiff brush, rinse well and let dry. note , i said a "drop" of bleach.

I generally don't get overly attached to sharp things that "poke me from almost any position I put it in", but it's your call. It took me a bit to get used to my G17 rubbing, prodding, and stabbing me when I first started CCW so it's probably much the same in this case.

I don't think I've ever noticed the HEST rubbing, poking prodding or stabbing me after EDCing and trail carry every day for the last nine months. and the prybar is awesome. I've never used it for anything other than popping can lids, but it adds alot of security and retention to the grip that gives it ergonomics the RC3 pales in comparison to. Either he has small pockets or big hips, because I can't see a carry solution where it could ever bother me.
