I recently picked up a hest woodsman. It has some variations from the orginal that was done in partnership with ESEE and Rowen. Dpx has now teamed up with one of my favorite foreign companies Lionsteel. They are known for putting out one of my favorite folders of all time the sr-1. This version comes stonewashed in a leather button over sheath.
One of the main reasons i picked this blade up is the steel it sports. It is made from NIOLOX steel. This steel has some popularity over in Europe but hasn't got much use in production blades in the U.S.. When i looked up reviews on this steel i didnt find much about it. What i did find on some Euro forums is that it is a very tough stainless steel that takes a wicked edge and holds it. I saw one video where a guy batoned a nail in half with no chips to the NIOLOX.
I edge proed the blade down to 15 degrees per side with a 1200 grit polished finish. I brought it to work this morning and now it was time to put this thing to work at the plant nursery i work at. Of course the customer wants the tree that has been sitting there for two years and is rooted.
i cut some burlap and grabbed some new two ply twine. I had to cut the pre existing dirt filled twine from the trunk and give it some new string. What this does is keep the trees roots steady in its rootball. If i didnt replace string and the old worn dtring snaps the tree can rock loose in the rootball and die.
i now had to tie trees top so branches wont break while being transported
Since taking those pics i have sold a couple more trees like it. The edge on the NIOLOX has been holding up great. Even though im cutting through dirty string i havnt noticed any micro chipping and it still slices paper. My final verdict on this blade is a good one. You dont need to be in a hostile environment to enjoy this blade it makes a great little EDC. I will keep you posted on the edge as time and work it recieves accumulates .
