Hi ,I am new here and I am trying to find some info on my old hewing axe. It is stamped "L.BENJAMIN"
"CAST STEEL"
"N- "

I am trying to figure out how to post pix

"Axe Makers of North America" lists J S Benjamin from Dayton Ohio and a Timothy Benjamin from New York.
Seems like I remember there being more information out there on Benjamin's and maybe it's buried somewhere in this forum.

The "N" under "CAST STEEL" probably said Warranted. Denoting a first quality axe and warranted against defects.

I found 2 more stamps at the back.stamped diagonaly. "Cast steel" "...EOMAN" the first part of that word is gone. Does anyone have any thoughts on age or what this is?

In a dark place hold a flashlight at an angle to the stamps and it will create a shadow that may allow you to read the stamp. Sometimes it is worth it to take a picture while you do it because it comes out better than the eye for some reason.

Ok, I tried the flashlight and it looks like someone in the past filed that portion. Probably to remove some mushrooming?

It seems like I dug into these guys some years ago, perhaps through Ancestry and there was a father and then his son listed as blacksmiths. I might have them confused but I don't have the time while the weather is nice, pretty sure it was on this forum though.

I am trying to figure out how to attach pix so ya'll can see. Also,I think someone before me put a handle on it but it must have been paul bunyon because i cant wrap my fingers around it and it is strait as can be . I want to put a new handle on it but Im not sure of how it should look for this particular axe.

An internet search like "how to post pictures on a forum" may be helpful.

However, if you want more specific information you could create a post here:

Explain your particular situation in the post. This may include:

- The device and operating system you are using to post to BladeForums (e.g. Windows laptop)
- If you currently have a digital image
- If you have an image, its location (your device or the internet)
