I haven't been on here in quite some time, but I'm hoping that someone can help me verify what I bought.
I had to run into town for something and ended up stopping by a yard sale. It had the typical yards ale knife pile, some junk knives, a couple neglected Kbars that were heavily rusted (I should have asked about them because they were restorable) and then I saw what I think may have been the sleeper of the bunch. When I first unsheathed it I figured it wold be a cheap import. I soon had second thoughts. I saw the "Hewitt" on it and thought it sounded familiar. "012" is on the opposite side of the blade. The tapered tang, liners, what looked to be once decent fit and finish and possible numbering made me think custom. The price was right, so I rolled the dice. A quick search has it looking like it may be Ronald “Cotton” Hewitt's work, more specifically the Caribou 2, though the blade measurement is about a 1/2" short and the pins are different.
So what do I have? These photos were taken as I bought the knife. I plan to give it a good once over and try to get it looking decent without removing too much of its character if it's what I think it is.

Does anyone know if this maker is still active? I found a website that I think is his, but haven't gotten a response to my email.

I've never heard of him, and he isn't listed in Knives Annual 1990 or 2000. That's a really nice example of an RWL drop point, and those osage orange scales will last centuries. The knife looks like it's 70's-80's vintage? Some pretty aggressive sharpening went on, unfortunately.

Clean it and use it. :) Good luck.

I believe he started making knives in '85. It's definitely an older model. I agree on the sharping, but think some of that may be just the number if times it was sharpened over the years. I just wish I could get an idea of any value if it were cleaned up. Even though it definitely shows its age/use I heard that some of the older Loveless style blades can have some value.
