My name's Craig and I've been bitten by the knife bug!
I just purchased a Moorhaus tactical and hate the black brown micarta handle. I want to change them and create new ones from scales. With no experience but good with hand tools, what material should I use? Micarta, G10, etc..?? I like a tactical look so probably not wood.

BTW, the damn knife is D2 and a freakin beast! Very nice for the money

Use whatever material you like that you think will look good on your knife.

Pretty much everyone here has a favorite; some Micarta, some G10, others will swear by whatever. They'll all claim (argue) their preference is the only "correct" choice.

BTW some "tactical" knives ("tactical" in that they were actually issued and used by the military) have metal, wood, bone, leather, and other natural materials for the handle.

Use the material you like, I love FRN handles but im not a fan of normal titanium and would rather take aluminum over that or steel in most cases. This would probably be counter to most people's opinion on what's the best but it's my preference and I'm the one using it.

Isn't this just another pakistani made knife brand? Cfk cutlery rebadge?

Its best to avoid these knives on Amazon and eBay.

what would you recommend for a well made tactical fixed blade? $100 -$200 . I love mercworx but they are too pricey at this time. Thanks

What blade shape? Specific length or thickness you prefer? You can also sort by your specifications on bladehq and just browse what there is. Theres tons of tactical style fixed blades in that price range. Tops knives makes some interesting, albeit quality products.

Edit: Never owned this one but looks pretty neat :D

I think people over use the word “tactical” in place of “modern”. What makes a knife “tactical”?

Welcome to the forum.

If you want a "tactical look", the best DIY options are g10 or micarta (black, of course).
As far as the knife itself - if you like it, use it... just keep your expectations reasonable.

Recommendations for quality tactical knives? What features are important to you, how big a knife do you want? For what tactics will your knife be used?

I agree. seems that if you paint a bottle opener black and wrap it with some paracord you now have a “tactical” bottle opener.

If I were to look at a knife that was aimed solely toward Military use....
Busse COMBAT Knives - most are way overbuilt and marketed toward the “tactical” guys. They do make the Ratmandu which is a very, VERY good knife.

I'd say just get some G10, a dremel and a drill and go ham. There are prob some vids on you tube about making handles/scales too.

Tell me more. I'd love to see this being made in Texas. Any proof of it? It's doubtful it actually is anything they actually say.
Yea your probably right I just saw someone replied to that question that it was made in Texas.
Saw it at that big internet store.

That's the problem with these big internet stores. They are bad to buy from generally. False advertising is often used. They just want to sell 10$ knafs for 50 for huge profits. Mark made in USA of course cause that's what sells. People aren't going to think otherwise lol. Clearly no knife made of d2 and in the USA is going to be around 50. It's a huge lie.

Hey, the guy is new on the board and the hobby - don't attack him. Craig: if you are looking for a good quality, inexpensive fighting-style knife, I'd look at a Becker kabar Ek knife. Also a Himalayan Imports kukri (buy one on this forum). I personally like the
Boker Apple Gate Fairbairn Combat II Knife
