was that you that beat me for the dui chirra off ebay yesterday? If so congrats! Looks like the smith that forged that one new a thing or two about fullering. Adios, stevo

If it's the one with no leather on the scabbard, yeah that was me. I usually look at who's bidding so I don't step on any of my bud's toes, but didn't recognize any ebay handles this time. This one looks like it needs a little work, but it has potential. If the wood of the scabbard is sound, I may try to recover it myself.

Ebay has been good to me lately on the inexpensive user khuks. I have 3 khuks and one neat khyber knife coming.

:D No toes were stepped on, I'm glad you got it. To be honest it's the first thing I've ever bid on at E-bay. For a couple of days nothing was happening with it so I decided to bid about an hour before it closed. I didn't get home from work before it was all said and done. I guessed it was you 'cause how many fergasomethins want old kukris! Keep us posted on your rebuild progress ; if you have some spare time original specs would be cool too. God bless and adios, stevo

Hey Steveo,
I wish neither of us had won this one.:(

It came in today, and the blade is chrome plated. It's like nothing I've seen before. The workmanship is beautiful. Fit and finish is outstanding. There is no lion head on the butt. The blade is pretty sharp, but I bet it's a wall hanger.

Hold on a minute while I go outside and do a little testing.

Well my initial impression may have been wrong. I put a quick convex edge on it and cut some saplings from around the edge of the yard. Not much of a test so I found an 8" pine log that had come down in the ice storm this winter. Two blisters later, the log is in two pieces and the edge is not damaged. Maybe it's got some good steel in it after all. Hey guys, is there such a thing as a chrome plated khuk that's not junk?

Fergusson chrome plating aint the kiss of death. There was a time, when many people thought chrome plating was the greatest thing since sliced bread on knives, so any strange lookin sharp and pointy thingy got itself a dose of it. Ive removed chrome plating off of a 100+ year old kris, and I can tell you people get some strange ideas of what to do with thier new toys. Though I had to say, the experience made me wish the guy had just buffed the thing to death instead. :( :barf:

ferguson, while I hope to never see another chrome plated kris, if you can find an easy way to remove the plating let me know. I ended up doing it by polishing it off, and my goodness did that take forever. Made me see levels of despair I never thought possible.:D

Steve, I do not know how to remove the chrome easily. Are you positive it is chrome, or is there a chance it is nickel? Either way I will ask the guys at the plating shop that I send parts to if there is an easy and effective way to do this. I'm sorry to hear that it was plated, but it's nice to know that the workmanship was good and it seems to be made to work. Any guess how old it is? JP has been around these parts lately ~ maybe he could shed some light on this oddity. Adios, stevo

I wonder if there's an easy way to "de-plate" it with an electrical current?

Why bother? The original finish is gone, whether the plating is there or not is irrelevent, and there may have been a few officially issued khukuries made with the chrome plating. Perhaps this was one of them? They were usually parade or presentation pieces.

If you really want to take it off, you would probably need to take it in and have the whole thing sandblasted.

Of course you are right N2S. The chrome in and of itself does no harm. I just get wound up and impatient sometimes.:) Did I make a mistake by sharpening it? When I did so, I thought the value of the piece was negligible. It probably was a parade or presentation piece, as the workmanship was above average. Oh well. Better to make a mistake on a $35.00 piece than a $300.:footinmou

Thanks for all of your comments.

Steve
