Whats up guys and gals!

I'm fairly new to knives but a love being in the woods, and love anything to do with survival. So I wanted to post to get some recommendations on knives' and just general things I need for my Bug out bag, survival pack, etc. I already have the basics first aid an whathaveya and currently watching some of nutnfancys first aid kits to get a better idea but as I started to get into this whole survival gear trip, I seemed to stop while watching videos of nutn's knife reviews (dammit!) and i say that because he turned me into a cutlerylover... lol did ya catch that one? moving on I seem to have grown a fascination with knives or anything sharp for that matter, I'm still learning the good steels, types of handles G10 vs FRN and blade grinds FFG, Saber grind you know the basics to everything knife related. But I still need some guidance and info on whats the best for which job and hopefully some recommendations on first knives to buy to start a moderately expensive collection. SO! anyone wanna help me out here!? sorry for the rambling and whatnot. lol

How much do you want to spend? Folder or fixed? I can start by recommending some brands to look at...but this list will by no means be exhaustive. It is generally composed of middle of the road priced brands, without venturing into the $300+ area.

Folding:

Spyderco
Benchmade
Cold Steel
Zero Tolerance
Kershaw

Fixed (I am not as knowledgable here):

Swamp Rat
ESEE
Becker

Since you like being in the woods, then first things first I would get a Leatherman

start with quality production knives I'd say. Spyderco Delica 4 ffg for instance. Also check your local knife laws, think Detroit is kind of strict for instance.

Welcome to the forum! I to am pretty new here. You'll really like it here, there are a lot of cool, helpful folks on this forum. I've also noticed a considerable lack of elitism, which is nice for a change. Here is my advice, although remember to take it for what it is since I'm fairly new to blades myself.

If you are starting a new love affair with knives you will most certainly need a nice EDC or every day carry knife. There are several brands and different price points out there. Most people will tell you to go with a folder for EDC because of the ease of carry and conceal-ability. I would recommend looking at something from Spyderco, Benchmade, or Kershaw/ZT. Each of the these companies make some really great blades with many choices in steel, lock variety, and opening methods. Kershaw seems to have a lock on the sub $100 market while BM and Spyderco have lots of offerings in the $100-$300 range.

I prefer Spyderco and ZT. ZT is Kershaw's high end/tactical lineup. They are built like tanks, and can stand up to some very hard use. Spyderco's have a very distinctive look with their Spyderhole opening method, some would even say ugly. But you should really give one a try if you can find a local store that sells them. They are widely regarded as some the best knives as far as ergonomics and slicing are concerned.

The Blade Forum limited run Kershaw Skyline is going to be a pretty nice knife. It has S30V steel which is a great steel, it takes a nice edge and holds it for a while. The Skyline is really light and it has a nice flipper opening method. Check out Nutnfancy's review on the Skyline, it's one of his favorites of all time, and for good reason.

When it comes to your bug out bag you should probably consider a nice fixed blade. I haven't really done much research on that subject yet so I'll have to let someone else suggest a nice fixed blade for you. Hope this helps.

thanks! i was also wondering because before i posted this i was looking at your profile to see what kind of knife you have on your avatar? cant figure it out but it looks vuury noice as borat would say lol

both actually i love fixed and folding knives, the only fixed knives i have now are a cold steel true flight thrower (bc i love to throw) and a cold steel recon scout. but I'm looking to spend about 400 at the most on a knife because anything over that and it would sit in my drawer and i like to use my knives but depending on how badass the knife is i might spend a little more if its a must have. spyderco is currently my favorite right now just bought my first para 2 and i am waiting to by the more plain jane version so i can use that and keep my digi/black as a back up ( i have OCD ) when it comes to things i really like lol i have a fear that if i use it like it should be used and something happens to it then i dont have a backup lol dont ask....

Hi Motor, Welcome

For survival I would prefer a fixed blade like one of the kabar range for example
for ZT I would choose the 0100

For folders my choice would be ZT hands down.

You'll also get some good answers in the Great Outdoors and the Gagets and Gear sections

thanks for the info much appreciated! and i LOVE spyderco's !! i have the limited run green G10 tenacious just becuase its cheap and what you get for money/quality is great! also just bought my first para 2 digi/black dlc blade and i absolutly love that knife. the ZT's tho are gonna have to wait because i want the hinderer version and thats a lil pricy so im gonna save up, but ur deff right they are tanks! thanks for the advice! and welcome to the forum yourself!! :)
