^ picture.

im wondering if there is anybody here that knows of any less expensive knives that look like it, because im really going for the design.

i still want something of quality, but maybe in the $100 range

maybe any makers out there who would make a similair one for less than the listed $295?

I would be very surprised if you found one for less than $500, these are big knives that are made from a big hunk of steel with complicated grinds, and a sawback, which is going to take any maker a fair amount of time.

That's a complicated design to build. Profiling by hand is very time consuming. The grinds are time consuming also. I doubt you'll find a maker to make one for less then $500.00 as has been mentioned. Add material costs which are going up in price, again, and the cost to make that knife add up. I won't touch that design with a 10 foot pole.:D Good luck

No problem. And don't be sorry, we all have to learn somehow. Good Luck finding the knife you need.

The other guys gave you the straight scoop. Quality costs -- don't be afraid to pay for it -- and performance costs even more. "Buy quality and only cry once."

The online list prices for the TOPS version of the Tom Brown Tracker knife start in the $200 range from a Froogle.com search.

Buy the TOPS tracker used (ebay, here, etc.) for $100. Seriously....there are plenty.

Hey man, welcome. I've looked and looked and you CANT find one for less than $200. there's the paratraxx which is the same general design, but is a POC. I've looked at TOPS a good deal, and i wasn't ever really impressed. I wanted a tracker or WSK too and found that i could make a better one for less money than the TOPS tracker. Here's where I'm at so far -

it really is a tough design, but i wouldn't discourage you to try and make one if you feel up to it. I did most of it with a drill, hacksaw, and a file.

Ian and Shawn, sorry for my tardiness in responding, i forgot i had posted here lol. yes i'm going to clean it up once i decide that i'm finished with all of the major design issues. I used 0-1 from www.toolanddie.com. if i had it to do over again, which i might do eventually, i'd do a lot of things differently as far as design goes.
ian - have you ht'd your wsk yet? cuz if not the teeth aren't that hard to do...
Alex

Alex, I'm looking into making my own WSK. Anyway wisdom on making teeth? I've never made a knife before. Thanks.

Shawn

the poor man's way to grind teeth on to the spine is to use the corner of a bastard file. the trick is to practice before you actually try to file them on. they go on in a sort of zig-zag pattern. the sawback ends up having a kerf the width of whatever stock you're using. how i did it was to stagger 2 sets of .25" spaced marks where the saw will be - one set on each side of the blade. then get a file and use the edge to connect the dots. if i was to do it over again i think i would space each side at 1/4 - 1/32 - 1/4 - 1/32 etc... sry if this is kinda confusing, if you can't picture it i'll try and untangle it for you. lol hope this helps
Alex

it is pretty cool looking. but that being said, i wouldn't buy one to carry. i'm fairly familiar with survival needs having been a ranger in the 70's military.it would make a much better camp tool i feel.
but it certainly isn't beyond most peoples ability to make one. just need a big ol hunk a steel to start with. and the ability to heat it.

Alex C. Can you email pics of your WSK. I would really like to see it. I want to try and make one. I recently purchased one from Red Scorpion Six the new Predator WSK and I am getting urge to hit the shop and see how difficult it is to make. I may come to appreciate the knife more if I try myself. Thank
