Looks kind of cool! I'm wondering about the utility...the head seems to be tomahawk size, but you've got a lot of handle. You could get a good swing out of it, but not a lot of weight at the business end. Small edge... Also, what's the handle material? And is the leather sheath/cover adequate for handling/use as a cane?

Seems like the head fits into the shaft, not vice versa. I wonder if that will affect the strength of the joint...if you put any weight on the head, perhaps?

So, what do you guys think? It definitely looks cool...!

I agree it looks interesting, but it would be nice to know more about it !
Great for a walk in the woods.

Reminds me of the Cold Steel Warhammer.

I agree but without the weight to make it even come close to the warhammer. Hollow shaft with 2 in height head which is thin as well as "holey" won't make it a historic addition to weapon and household hybrids everywhere. Still can be used in emergency.

Some forumites made their own tomahawk walking stick and damn their's look like you can rely on it in times of war :) This forum is made of stern stuff for sure

Cotherion, did anyone post any pics of their projects? I'd love to see one....my friend made a hiking staff out of a Cold Steel Battle Ax...a little bigger than tomahawk, but he lives in a wooded area, so feels more comfortable with the heft.

What did they use as a base for their walking sticks? Were any of them Cold Steel products?

Spot on mate they were mostly Cold Steel ones. The links I'll post when I have time to search for them but in the meantime you might wanna try the serch function for something like axe of tomahawk walking stick.

In the works by one forumite is a tomahawk walking stick in which the handle can be detached into a total of 3 individual pieces. Shortest mode is tomahawk and the longest is warhammer/walking-stick. I'll try to link it up. Beautiful as well as functional.

There you go, I will use my new poll axe for a large walking staff with a bit of nasty on the end. 6lb + walking staff? ok, maybe a bit heavy. I have been looking for a decent hiking/hatchet stick for a while. This one looks interesting.

It reminds me of a .....I think its polish staff/axe, don´t really remember what its called. I´ll have to look it up.

It's called Ciupaga in Poland (and fokos in Slovakia, I believe)

An interesting concept if you ask me, but I think it puts high stress on the head so it would only be occasionnal use only.

See this one too (from wikipedia):

Fokos is the Hungarian name, also. It's a nice bit of old East European folk art these days, but used to be handy for walks in the deep, dark woods ... you never knew when a werewolf or vampire would come at you out of the fog ...

Those are pretty nice! Thanks, Ravaillac and Esav!

Ravaillac, where would the stress come from...the person putting weight on the head while using it as a walking stick handle? I looked at the Tops Hawking Stick and I was wondering the exact same thing: would it loosen the head if you put your weight on it?

I wonder if Tops patterned the Hawking Stick after the Ciupaga/Fokos?

My friend Terrill is the one that designed this contraption. He's also the one that designed the Hoffman Harpoon. I'm speaking for me here, not Terrill, but this is one of those compromise situations in my opinion. Primarily, this was designed as a walking cane/stick. The tomahawk part is more of a secondary function from what I can glean.

I had questions about the amount of force you could exert with this as well, but it's a pretty solid design. And, since you can't really walk down a city street with a tomahawk slung in your belt, that's where the compromise comes in. It serves primarily to assist with normal walking activities, but can be used in a pinch where an edged weapon might be needed--whether in the city or the woods.

The design will give you a bit more reach than a normal hawk because of it's length, and I imagine you could stuff quite a bit of little survival "must-haves" inside the hollow tube if you remove the rubber foot. That in itself would lend to this being a handy item to have around not only when you're trying to accessorize your outfit in town, but in the deep woods as well.

If you put your mind to it, there are all kinds of things you could do with the Hawkin Stick. Just takes a little imagination!!

It might not be true to the times, but I seem to remember one of the Indians in Last of the Mohicans using a very long handled tomahawk. Like I said, it's not a documentary, so i don't know if any such thing was ever actually used.

Thanks, G-man!

With the sheath on the head, is that a good enough cover to make it relatively inconspicuous? I mean, if you were to use it as a walking stick, do you think you would attract any unwanted attention?

Also, does the sheath make for a good solid grip if using as a cane?
