What do you guys use for targets when you throw hawks for sport? I need to try to come up with something besides a tree a also it needs to be somewhat portable. I will use knives on it also. Thanks for any info. :) :)

Find a round cut off tree trunk 18" wide and 8 to 12" thick check local listings for free wood from a land scaping project. get a piece of scrap ply wood4" by 6" works nicely. screw the round of wood to the board 4'6" up or wherever you like. use 2x4's to make an a shaped frame like an artist's eisle(sp) brace it well. Extend legs out back and hone your carpendry skills. The plywood is not for sticking your hawk, It is a back stop so you do not have to hunt for your hawk on a wild throw. the round of wood is the target and will take much abuse!. If you cannot find the rounds, then make a square target from 10 18" pieces of 2x4 screw them together narrow side facing you like a vertical books on a shelf. Paint appropriately.:D

Also, make a mark on the ground 8 feet from the target and 12 feet from the target. keep practicing at each distance untill you can stick it evry time!

Enjoy.

H2oBuffalo,

Thanks for the info it was very helpful. I did not think about turning the boards sideways and screwing them together.

Made this out of cedar, the stand out of treated lumber. Works great.

Remember to keep the screws twards the back of the boards so you don't hit them with the hawk. I used glue and dowels to stack mine.

Yeah I was thinking glue and a bar clamp until it dried. I wonder what a sheet of 3/4 inch plywood glued to the front would do.

I took 4 X 4 X 8s and cut them in half. Then I drilled thru them and ran a threaded rod thru them. It works OK but I am planning on moving it. My horses come up and stand behind the target which scares me when newbies are throwing. Plus misses go thru the fence, into the horse pen, a hassle to retrieve. Also our above ground pool is now put up and one miss would go thru the pool like butter. This target is good for most anything that throws. It been up for about 6 years now and holding together pretty good.

These are really neat ideas ! Here in rural Surry County of Virginia I got to 'Big Ass' dead trees . I carved a silowette into one that we throw at from time to time.......tends to 'piss' the racoons off though.

Nice collection. Care to walk us through what you've got there? Are those hawks from H&B Forge?

Thanks reconseed, the thing nice about it is I can move it around.

thedishdoc,

Completely independently, I came up with the same design as you. I used 2x4 treated pine rather than 4x4. Did you design it that way so that you could replace some boards if needed? That was the intent I had, but after puting it together, it seems like more trouble than it's probably worth.
