This is what I accomplished after 2 strippings with the Klean Strip and a ton of brushing with a wire brush, now I assume its time to sand. I have some semi coarse and some 1000 grit. Do I use the coarse or just go right to the 1000?
They're not great pics cuz my camera sucks. The top of the blade is a bit darker than the rest and I don't know whats up with the dark circle in the middle of the blade.

My 7 had a darker top part than the rest of the blade and so did my buddies 2. Honestly I kind of like it. It kind of reminds me of my 10's finish. Even after I sand and finish mine I will put a different patina on the top part, just cause the contrast looks sweet. As for the spot???

I personally like to start at 320 or 400. Then work my way to 1000 or higher. I feel like I end up doing less work to get it looking nice and fly. It kinda depends on how scratched up the finish is underneath. I can't really tell from your pics.

what he said

my top is a little darker than the botton blade as well. looks good so far, post after you sand it.

Okay-here she is all sanded and wiped down and her 'pants' put back on. I really like how it came out for my very first attempt and it looks nice next to my SYKCO dumpster mutt. A picture perfect pair.:)

..I'm hesitant to try a mustard or hot sauce patina cuz I'm diggin' it just the way it is and I fear I won't like it as much as I do this. Can the patina be taken completely off if I decide against it??

Also I'm too poor to buy new handles at the moment so I think I'm gonna prime and paint these...I know its generic but what the hell? But first I better ask you guys is I can buy replacement black scales if I want to? I've come across the micarta set all over the place but never seen the factory black for sale. I guess they could just be ordered from Ka-bar

Yes, you can always sand off the patina if you don't like the way it turns out.

I've thought of painting the grivory before too. I'm sure someone else can suggest the best type of paint as I know there's at least 1 thread that discussed it -- I wanna say some type of krylon paint is supposed to work well.

I'm not aware of the black grivory scales being sold separately, but maybe through Kabar directly. Otherwise you'd have the look for a trade or on the exchange.

I forgot to tell what and paper I used, if anyone care or wants a suggestion on grit. I started with 330 and then finished with 1000.
As for the krylon, they do have a small line of colors specifically for plastics, but the rusto painter's touch has the better spray tips. Krylon's new adjustable tips suck.
I buy a lot of graffiti oriented import spray paint which comes with several different size tips and tons of awesome colors but its pricey. I figure worst case is I don't like it and only have to deal with it for a short time til I get my micarta set.

So how about you show me some of your modded BK9's??

if you find yourself needing and extra pair of grivory ill send ya a set. and as for modded 9's well let me see what kind of old pics of mine i can drum up. be back shortly

Thats a hell of a collection Clich. How'd you get that texture on the Rattler's scales? Dremel? Also I'm very new to this and don't even know what is used to blue the blades. Can you tell me and include a brand name so I have a good place to start my shopping. This really is a great place for assistance/info. You guys have all been great helps

Hey Clich I'd really appreciate that-I painted them and I kinda like them but I want to have a black set to swap should the sealer I used after the paint not hold up to all the hand oil/sweat and motion I don't want an ugly faded handle. Do you need me you pay for shipping?

Okay I've primed-painted-sealed the scales and I don't really like them:confused:. I was aiming for more gray than blue but it is what it is so I'll take a set of black for sure Clich if you're still willing. Its not the worst turn out but its just not catching me. Maybe it will look batter after a patin attempt but I'm not holding my breath on me loving them at all. Well what do you guys/girls think???

Sorry for the late replies, i guess the thread got pushed down before i could see you replied. For the bluing i use permablue, its cheap and effective. just following the instruction on the bottle and you will be set. I use permablue's "superblue" which is just what it say super dark. The thing about blue is it has a funky smell some people dont like and you shouldnt use it on blades that will do any food prep for a while, its poisonous but after it sets for a week or so ive used it on food and im alive enough to type. You will need 0000 steel wool to buff the finish after you apply it and also with use to keep it looking nice. The others are a blue/ bleach etching which is where you blue the blade and soak in bleach which causes a reaction that actually super ages the blade where the blue is. In person it looks 100 years old and is a real cool effect, but it is also 100% permanent so i dont recommend it on a blade that you love with practice first.

No worries man ill send the grivory to ya, email me your address and ill get em out as soon as i get a chance.

And now here she is with new stainless nuts/bolts, though I forgot I needed 3 and only got a 2pk. Also I did a mustard patina on one side but then got too low on mustard to want to start the other side. So tell me what you think. I thought that the whole area the mustard covered would change, instead you can see that my patina is an outline of the design I made with the mustard. I think it looks pretty good for my 1st ever attempt. I welcome all you feedback/opinions.

Here's the plain side displaying the stainless bolts.

Here's the patina-done with yellow mustard(generic French's, lol) and allowed to set for a little over 90mins. I was going for kind of a thorn vine/barbed wire look:rolleyes:
