I ordered another Mooremaker large frame trapper. This one has smooth buffalo horn scales. Both blades are slip joint unlike the other one I got that has one linerlocking blade. JAlexander pointed me in Mooremakers direction and I'm glad he did. Great knives and a good company to deal with. Check them out at www.mooremaker.com

I have seen the name mentioned here but had never heard of it before. I took a long look at some of the pocketknives and they look very interesting. I collect congress and four or five bladed stockman knives and was most surprised to see both represented in their product line.
So, talk to me about the blade quality, the edges they put on them, the fitting of the scales, liners, and blades. From what I read the blades are of carbon steel, but what kind of carbon steel? Do the blades walk and talk or just snap open like most American pocketknives?
Are these knives actually made by Mooremaker or are they made elsewhere and marketed by the Mooremaker folks?
I have always appreciated a well made pocketknife.
I also appreciate in advance your helping out a fellow collector/accumulator with answering the questions I have asked.

Hey Scott, glad you saw another MM that you liked. I've had a chance to hold one of their buffalo horn models, and it was mighty nice. And hey, you can't go wrong with a trapper pattern. I looked at their site, and you definitely got the big'un. I generally prefer the 3-7/8" size for pocketability, and it's still a good size for utility. I think I may get my sister one of their smaller working trappers for Christmas, since she's been carrying a knife she inherited from our grandfather, and I'd hate to see her lose it. My next personal puchase from them is either going to be the stag three backspring whittler, or the serpentine stock knife. I can't say enough good things about their Moose pattern, either. In terms of carryability, it's as good as my Eye Brand Canoe.

Wil, I've never held the congress or five-bladed stockman, but I know that those particular knives are made by Queen. I have the moose pattern, as I've said, and the fit and finish are as good as I've seen on any modern non-custom slipjoint. The backsprings are strong without being nailbreakers, and the blades don't touch the liners anywhere. On the Mooremaker site it says that they use 1095 for the blades of their Queen-made knives. No half-stops, sadly.
The working knives that they sell are made by Camillus, I've been told. The F&F aren't quite as good, but for the price, they're nothing to sneer at. Better than anything I've seen from Case in a while, at least. The stockman that I have and use as my EDC is a good using knife. I don't know about the steel, but it's shaving sharp, and that's good enough for me.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can do any more.

Congrats on your Moore Maker. I have a Trapper from them, and it is great. I think it is put together much better than most of my newer Case knives.

I want one of their fixed blades. Anyone have one they can comment on?

Wil, like J said, you will not be disappointed with their knives. The quailty is there on the higher priced models. Queen seems to be the maker of these knives. They remind me of the Winchester (Blue Grass Cutlery) large trappers. Fit and finish is top shelf. Blades are carbon steel, nice flat grinds and take a hair popping edge. I'm not sure what type of carbon steel it is, but it's exceptional. I called Blue Grass several years ago and asked what type of steel they used, but they wouldn't tell me. Go figure. I'm looking at the buff horn regular trapper next. I'm a sucker for good old fashion patterns. When all the tacticals come and go the traditional folder patterns will always stand the test of time. :)
Rattler, the fixed blades are also similar to the Winchester models. The same carbon steel is used in them as in the folders.
James, I made a pouch sheath for the first large trapper I got similar to the sheathes I make for my custom knives. It's a nice tight fit and is easy to access. Nice thick 8-9oz. leather.

As I looked over the Mooremake site again I could see at least two hundred bux heading south to Texas, maybe a bit more. Oh well, I never saw a Brinks truck at a funeral so I might as well spend it on things I enjoy!!!!

Try Big Bend Saddlery for the MM bone handle knives at lower prices....

www.bigbendsaddlery.com

I am not affiliated with them...have never ordered from them....but their pricing looks good.

I just got in today's mail my second bone handle MM pattern, a medium trapper to add to my other 3-1/4" stockman....I bought each on FleaBay...both gently used already by previous owners.

Fit, finish, walk and talk all the absolute best...what one would expect on Queen made slipjoints,
