A friend of mine had this on his facebook page.

I fugured it would get you all giddy;)

Thats a bugged out looking bug!

They become adults pretty much for the sole purpose of mating.. I have friends like that....:D

A luna moth. Rare find indeed, although apparently a common species, the live in the adult phase for only about 1 week. Coupled with the fact that they are nocturnal means they are rarely seen.

Yup! A luna moth. I've had the chance to spot one before on rare occasion. Not commonly seen, for the aforementioned reasons. Nice find!

Seen a great many of them.
Very pretty little ammie-noles.

Moths and butterflies make me smile. No matter how pissed I am, if I traypse off into the woods and see a Swallowtail or a Monarch I can't help but crack a smile.

Same way when I hear a bird sing, especially a Whipporwill or a Lark.

Same way if a deer bounds past me.

I smile a lot when I'm in the duh wuhdz...wonder why I don't do it when I'm stuck in the office.

...Oh yeah...it's the office and not the woods, that's why...

I do smile pretty heavily on payday Friday though!

When I worked at the prison and had to walk perimeter (which I dug, cuz I was outside, especially in the spring and early summer) I used to see all kinds of wildlife. Even smelled, then saw a skunk one night. I stayed clear of it though.

Also used to see a lot of these big bastards:

Big Rhino Beetles.

They'd make this growling, chirping kind of sound that was creepy as hell. And if they flew into you it felt like getting hit by a golfball.

...We used to scare inmates with them.

Hehehehe...

"Gawddam, LT! You people have some of the God awfulest monster bugs I ever seen!! Get that shit away from me!"

Thunderstorms on top of a mountain scared the piss out of 'em, too.

Big flitters.

What was I talkin' about again?

Oh yeah...any of you ladies ever see a Helgramite up close and personal?

Ugly little sumbucks...

Walking along the back roads and gravel roads up in the mountains here I have shined my light up through the pitch black darkness to see what I thought were bats only to see several large Luna moths above me . I have found some here that were ten inches across.

Have you ever had the chance to play with them in their caterpillar stage? They are the biggest caterpillars I have ever seen!

It seems this moth is more common in the south than the north.

I have no problem with that... You can keep all the big spiders as well:)

ahaha! Which one is the fuzzy one?!

Thats a male. The females have less plumose antennae. These guys have vestigial mouthparts, no eaty, just matey.

Try Moose Hillock camp ground in your neck of the woods, they are all over the place in summer...

Saw lunas regularly on the back of the house in Kentucky. Still see them pretty often here in WV, and it's always a joy. :)

Have you ever seen the ADULT version of the hellgrammite?!? 5 inch long prehistoric -lookin' bug called a Dobson fly. Males can have mandibles almost as long as their body! The female's bitey-bits are smaller, but still big enough to give you a nasty pinch.

IS THAT WHAT THOSE ARE?? I had one of those chew its way through the drywall in my ceiling once somehow (I've heard rumor that those big tusks are only for show, but I call bullshit) and I fought a horshoe battle with it.

That was like trying to smack a tank with a flyflap.

I swear it even looked at me and said: "Izzat all you got pussycakes?"

Up until I stomped it with a Wolverine workboot.

That thing was frightening. Frightening.

I know, all you macho bug lovers are saying: "How can a flitter like this be a woodsman."

And the answer is simple: I go out dressed in a lead suit with four cans of "Raid", a flamethrower and two flyflaps velcro'd to a modified duty belt. No nasty ass creepy-crawlie is gettin' in my hair.

I don't hate all bugs. Just the big, scary, monstrous looking ones. I'm a racist. Or is it species-ist??
