Just wondering if you can name or describe a few or all of your knives, that you think are too good to sell.

Just a wild guess, but maybe a Brend or two?

I will venture another.
I bet David Broadwell has one or two there also.
Maybe even a Rigney and an Immel dagger.

Okay, Gus and Dan have you been peeking in my safe?

When I first met Paul Basch I asked him about his collection. I figured a custom knife dealer would have an incredible collection. He did.

Although, it was all kept in a photo album. He explained to me that when you are a full time custom knife dealer it is difficult to keep from selling knives.

15 years later I understand oh so well!

I have been able to keep a few put away.

Brend LDC F-4 Prototype

Broadwell MLR SHF in Damscus and Dino Bone
Broadwell SHF in Damascus w/integral guard/sub-hilt w/Fossil Walrus Ivory

Fred Carter, Integral Fighte w/Ivory.

Frank Centofante, one of a kind pair of a fighter and boot knife, both with Ivory from the same Elephant Tusk. Took me 5 years to find the pair

Rod Chappel 7 knives to include a Hunting Leopard Bowie (possibly my favorite knife of all time).

George Herron: The first Bowie that George ever made and the LDC-5 Prototype.

Jimmy Lile Rambo II Knife and Dagger. With serial numbers in black. "What brings you luck Rambo?...This I guess (holding up the knife).

Bill Luckett Freedom Fighter, serial number 2 and the only one ever made in Ivory.

Bill Imel, Integral Dagger w/Mastodon Ivory

Don Polzien, Katana and Wakizashi

Willie Rigney, Integral Dagger w/ Mastodon Ivory and engraving.

Steve Rapp, Kelsey and Karly bowies.

Roger Russell, Fighter with Mineralized Walrus Ivory.

Herman Schneider Fighter w/Stag.

Fortunately I get to handle, see and own (at least for a little while) a lot of great knives. Because of this I am always looking for new knives and new makers. The collector in me is what got me to start Vanguard knives.

What I really enjoy is working with makers, designing knives and having these knives made.

the mind reels.

great question, Chubby, and a customarily honest and thoughtful answer from Les.

Whew! That's quite the collection Les! But I find it hard to believe that out of all those great blades there isn't a single folder. C'mon Les, you must own a folder or two.....

Hi Peter,

No, I don't have a single folder in my collection. In the first 8 years I was a dealer I probably only owned a dozen or so folders.

It wasn't until the Tactical Folders became popular that I got into folders. Over the last 6 years I have probably owned more folders than fixed blades.

That's not to say I would not have a folder in my collection. About 18 months ago I owned a pair of Moran folders (for about 6 days). Those would have been a nice pair of folders for my collection.

That is my problem with the folders the ones I really like are $$$$$$$$.

H.H. Frank
Ray Appleton
Michael Walker

I also would like to get some of Virgil Englands work as well.

So Peter, who's folders do you have in your collection?

Les, surprised you don't have an 8.5" Brend Model 2 stashed away ... ?

Surely you carry a folder around though... what do you carry typically?

(one of the custom's that sees heavy carry for me is a Broadwell LDC-107... now, if I could just get that knife in presentation ironwood, mokume bolsters, and a well heat-treated 420V blade...)

Hi Rob,

Actually, I have had several Brends in my collection. However, I seem to get sweet talked out of them from time to time. My last user I gave to a MP Sergeant, who among other things went through SERE Training with me, when I left Korea. He was an Army poster child. He handled that Brend like it was one of his children. He was leaving Korea shortly after me and headed to an assignment that would have him rotating on a SWAT Team. It was one of the few times I made a grown man cry without yelling at him.

This July I have coming from Walter a 8 1/2" Model 2 Sub-Hilt Fighter in 3V. This one will be in my collection. Don't ask it's not for sale.

The knife I carry on a daily basis is a no name model by Kit Carson. He made several of these for the Blade Show 3 years ago. The knife has a 3" blade, 440V, titanium frame with carbon fiber scales. The other knife I like alot is a larger version of the LDC-110 by Phil Boguszewski. He made up a couple of oversized ones for Bob and I.

Kit will be making two new model folders for me this year. Darrel Ralph will be doing a new "twist" on the EDC frame for me. Brian Tighe and Jim Hammond will also be doing new folders for me.

I have a feeling that one or two of these will find their way into my pocket.

You are a very lucky man Les! Thank you for the great web site and great selection of knives.

Nice collection, Les. My collection consists of 10 knives including rigneys, imel, carter, herrons and my favorite is my chappel, lady diana with walrus ivory. somehow, it just works. I smile every time a pick it up. Fit, finish, style...all the way down to the rolled edge. It's the only one I need.
