I use the King brand for no other reason than that is what the store had theat I bought them from. I have heard nothing but good things about the Norton brand. As for which one to get, for fine wood working tools I would get the 1000/6000, as that is a what you would just for sharpening to a fine edge with no initial damage to the tool. For knives, which generally see rougher use, 800/4000 has the advantage of being a bit faster to get rid of micro-chipping and minor indendation, and 4000 is a fine shaving finish which can be bettered with stropping on CrO. Of course the optimum choice is to get everything from 220 to 8000, but that's a fair bit of money. Just 'Cliff' is fine by the way.
