I am gifting a pocket knife to a friend.. I am now dealing with a choice though.

I was just wondering if anyone has something to say about whether I should go with the 373 or the 303 from Buck. Is the steel really make that much of a difference (their composition seems to be close enough that maybe there is no practical difference but I haven't used both)? Is there an overall construction difference that would make the 373 last less? Besides one being from the USA and one from China what else can you gals and fellows can tell me about them...

Very much appreciated! Pictures are very welcomed too!

Cheers and Thanks again!

moving this from Traditional to the realm of all things, Buck.

I'm not anti-china cutlery, but Buck has such reasonable prices on the American made 300s, that 303 isn't a bad deal in the scheme of things. I wouldn't feel any buyer's remorse buying one, and I don't think you would either. Either way it's a knife, and a gift, and I don't think he'll be disappointed.

Buck 301

Shameless plug for the Buck Collector's Club Knife (American made). All three blades made of BG42 super steel. However, you gotta be a member.

So there are no cutting tests that really show difference? I may still go with the USA made knife but I am very intrigued if there is an actually difference on their cutting performance.

I own and use both the USA and imported models. I haven't noticed much difference in performance, but then I mainly use them for opening mail and peeling fruit. (I prefer carbon blades for whittling). The fit and finish is about the same. The USA model might be perceived as a nicer gift because people associate it with better quality, so if the difference in price isn't too much for you I'd probably go with that. But there's nothing wrong with the imports.

Thank you for your comment. I will go for the 303 as I found one for a great price.

Cheers
