what if you made popular models in white g10/frn? Then people would be able to RIT dye them any color they wanted, the ability to customize their own model really appeals to some people....just a thought

I think the main issue is probably less than 1% of their customers even know what RIT dye is.

I'm with OP's idea but I think you are right.

It could to be notated in the Edge-u-cation sheet... Too much drama in the end, for one they would be promoting Rit Dye which is a totally different company, then there's user error and warranty and complaints when they muck it up... "It's Spyderco's fault, they told me to do it"... And if they dont notate it as meant to be customized and/or dyed, then the "smart" ones all over the world including the internet and youtube reviewers will be saying "wtf is Spyderco smoking selling white knives that get dirty just by looking at them?"

This has been suggested and discussed in years past, it doesn't look like they are gonna do it... If they make a white scaled knife again, it would be more for white being desired rather than Rit dye. But I'm not Sal, I could easily be wrong :)

Spyderco has already made a few models in white FRN.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think its a dumb idea, just an unprofitable one, an extremely extremely small percentage of their customers would buy them. White tends to instantly turn dingy and brown so dyeing would pretty much be their only use for most people.

I know at our work the boss doesn't like releasing anything for sale that's got no branding or can be peeled off and made nondescript.

For a bunch of reasons; we're proud or what we do and want to let people know when they see our work. We don't want someone seeing a Blue model and wanting one that they can't get. Someone who couldn't perform the dye the same way as they saw it done is going to be unhappy with the result and thus unhappy with their Spyderco.

Here's my suggestion. A custom order option option like Oakley does with some of the glasses. Spyderco picks a few popular models and lets you pick the blade steel, scale material and colour, and maybe a lanyard all from a canned list of course so it's doable. Then you pay a bit of a premium and get your own private sprint run that's still 100% built and OK'd by Sypderco.

Now that is a great idea.

Great answer...I think that's probably it. I've a lot of great dye jobs...the bad ones don't get shown

I agree, a custom order shop is exactly what we need. All it need entail is to have different color G10 options and different blade steel options that they already offer, for say the Military and Paramilitary, to start with. I am ready to order.

I really like the idea !!
White FRN/G10 could be nice for a lot of people !
Not only those 1% somebody was talking about.
Those who want to custom/Rit Dye it, would be able to.

A custom ordering process would be awesome (Bucks' custom shop is a good example). Black G-10 is played out.

I would love this...

Sal has already dismissed and shut this down in prior threads.

Who knows what the future brings though.... How big is that shiny new facility again? :D If it were ever to happen, only Golden Co. models would be considered.
