Okay, I've brought this up before, but I must bring it up to "The Man". Sal, I own a VG10 SPOT and absolutely love it (you can find posts all over these forums where I show my love of this blade)! I feel the handle is much more comfortable than any other neck knife or kerambit I've held. My question is this:

What are the cances of you guys making a SPOT with a blade an inch longer? It could even be a Harpy style blade. The handle is what has truly endeared this knife to me (although the blade shape it has now is magnificent).

Everyone of my friends that holds this knife loves how it feels in their hand, but they all say they wish the blade was a little longer. Maybe some of the other Spyderco fans could chime in on this (please). What do you think, Sal?

Hi J.Davey.

Thanx for the comments. Actually the SPOT was created at the request of forumites wanting a neck knife. After much research and design time on my part, the SPOT was created. Ergos were of particular importance because of the nature of the design. Fred Perrin's index finger hole was a core feature of the design.

As it turned out, the SPOT was not as popular as hoped and will be disco'd for the 2005 year.

On the issue of a larger blade version with the same ergonomic handle, what do you think?

I'm telling ya' Sal, a larger blade with the same shape or even a more conventional one like the Harpy would greatly improve the SPOT's appeal. Now, I'm gonna' go order another one before they are no more (I love it that much...it's a shame others didn't pick up on this wonderful knife). Thanks for the quick reply!

indeed Sal, i also think that a lager hawkbill blade (or even a small civilian type), would make this knife more appealing to the general public. Something more in the way of a serrated CRKT bearclaw type blade. :)

I personally would still want a plain edge. I do love the current blade profile of the SPOT, but an extra inch would be nice. Like I said, I think if the blade shape was going to be changed, the Harpy's blade would be perfect size and shape. It would also be easier to sharpen. Maybe a small selection of different blade styles would be good (kind of like the company that Makes that Hideaway knife everyone is always talking about on the forums...nice variety, but I feel its handle is lacking for overall function). Oh yeah, and I did indeed order another SPOT in VG10 from Knifeworks about an hour ago:D .

You know a "fixed bladed Dodo" would not be any larger than, let's say, the Ronin... I think it would work.

I liked the SPOT from the very beginning, and I like VG-10.
However, I didn't like the micarta handle treatment, which steered me towards the other SPOT with the minimalist handle; and, but, I really wanted it in VG-10 and so I never got off the spot and bought one.
Make sense?

I would buy a VG-10 Spot in any number of blade configurations, including a double-edged triangle (arrowhead) of about 1", if it did not have the micarta handle treatment.
Something about the micarta detracts from the minimalism of the knife.

I'd also drop the decorative holes.
The Perrin index finger hole suffices to identify this knife as a Spyderco.

This knife has a lot of good things going for it.
It surprises me that it has not enjoyed more popularity.

Hi Ken.

The extra holes was from my "Totem" pendant. It was planned to be dropped if the model continued (to honor the Onion/Kershaw design patent).

The micarta was more functional than appearance. A very slight increase in the thickness seemed to make the knife a little more ergonomic. Yes, splitting hairs, but that's what we do. I wanted a very thin piece of carbon fiber to serve the function insted of micarta, but it was too difficult and too expensive.

I'd still like to hear more about the "longer blade" :) .

blade shape, blade length, sheath type, fixed or folder?

I have the opposite view, the fad of neck knives has passaed, a large would do no better then the original, IMO.

You know, now that it is mentioned, I've never acyually carried a neck knife as a neck knife. I always rig the sheaths to be carried sideways on my belt. I do have many friends that do, however, like the neck carry. My other views on this design have already been stated.

This thread kind of relates to something I've been thinking about a little bit lately.

Are there any plans to turn the Dodo blade shape into a fixed blade? Maybe make it a little longer/modify it a bit but basically keep it the same? Maybe combine it with the handle ergos of the spot?

Or just turn the dodo into a fixed blade version with some modifications. I think it would satisfy the hawk bill fixed blade crowd and others will pick it up for the Dodo's natural utility in a fixed blade. Carbon Fiber handles? eh? eh?

The Dodo blade on a SPOT handle would be awesome! very similar in actual edge configuration, but the dip on top of the Dodo's blade makes it look a little "meaner" in my personal opinion. I like that.

I would like a Spot with a longer, straight edge, in VG-10. Kind of like a Ronin blade on a spot handle.

So far, replies seem to support my theory about the handle of the SPOT being its biggest asset. I think offering a couple different blade styles with that handle would be the way to go. I would love to see that handle with blades similar to the Ronin, Harpy, and Dodo. "S.P.O.T. Series" has a nice ring to it, too. I'd buy one of each. Variety is the key (along with slightly longer blade size). Oh yeah, and I like the blade holes; it just adds a little more asthetic appeal.

I liked the SPOT as a rescue knife, but found the blade too short. Perhaps the revamped SPOT can be targetted at rescue / kayaking / rafting / climbing blade...design in such a way that the holes in the kydex can take some kind of attachment to fix it to pack straps, PFDs, rafts, load-bearing vests etc.

For a rescue knife, I think serrated is best, but I'd settle for plain edge too. The overlays should also be slightly thicker.

As for bladelength, I think 2.5-3 inches. Bladesteel should be H-1 (serrated) or VG10 (plain). The reason is the H-1's edgeholding in a serrated form is comparable to much better steels, IIRC Sal's comments.

Hey Sal,

How about the SPOT with a longer blade( 3.00 to 3.25 inches)the same or similar shape as the present one, keeping the Cricket -like point Also, maybe two holes (one smaller hole right after the main finger hole) to allow for surer gripping of the metal handles, even in wet weather. The blade on a larger version could be a bit thicker. The handle could be the same metal outline but with compressed to allow for an effective hammer grip and a 'tail', ala the Scorpius. Throw all that together in a greyed color (similar to bead blast) witha sheath similar to the Perrin or Moran Tek-lok and this would be a great tool for work or play.

I think way too much about knives, sometimes :)
