If you please what are the pro's and con's of laminate vs solid ZDP189?

I am not Sal, but I think I can answer the question.

ZDP-189 is good because it can be hardened to a very high hardness and not be too brittle. But having a solid piece of HRC 67 ZDP-189 can leave you with a knife that can brake very easily if torqued.

Having it laminated between a softer steel allows it to bend instead of braking, and be more resistant to impacts at the side and spine. Yet, you retain the HRC 67 cutting edge.

I do not know of any advantages of *not* laminating it between a softer steel.

Hair: Thanks for the reply. Thats kind of what I was thinking. I cannot see any real advantage to solid ZDP. This steel must be extremely brittle. I read that Spyderco was going to solid ZDP. Must be a cost issue?

Hi LJK,

ZDP is very hard and not possible to stamp in forming a blade. The laminate just uses a thin piece of ZDP, with the rest being a material capable of being stamped.

Solid ZDP must cut with a laser which raises cost of forming.

There are some that say that ZDP is brittle, et. etc. Actually there is little "real world" experience with solid ZDP. Some like Cliff will quote mfrs numbers (safe), others will go out on a limb and state they believe the material will be brittle. We're all kinda waiting for the opportunity to "see for ourwelves" what it will do.

The solid ZDP Delica will be out in several weeks and to my knowledge, it will be the first opportunity for "real world" experience with solid ZDP.

I personally believe the material will surprise many by being tougher than expected, but like everyone else, it is just my "guess" based on our own testing.

Hope that helps.

Sal: Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I was just about to purchase a Gen 4 Delica and Endura. I think I'll wait for the ZDP version on the Delica and give that a go. When I first started getting into knives a put a high premium on toughness and in a fixed blade I still do, but in folders I've come to realize that edge holding is what I need. If I drop it on my cement garage floor I'll just have to buy another one:)
