Mmmmm... fry bread. One thing I miss from Rapid City. Indian Tacos (with fry bread)... okay, now I'm hungry :)

Indian tacos.. that's what I'm thinking for tomorrow night. :-)

Here's the rest of the recipe:
1 lb. Fried hamburger
2 18 oz.cans chopped tomatoes
1 large green pepper
1 large onion
1 18 oz. can refried beans
1/2 cup mushrooms
1/2 cup cooked rice
1 large can of red kidney beans
1 tsp. chili powder
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 head of lettuce, shredded
4 diced fresh tomatoes
Mix the first 10 ingredients in a large pot. S
immer on low heat for about 2 hours. While this is simmering make fried bread. Place hot fried bread on a plate, Top with sauce, add some shredded cheese on top, add lettuce, tomatoes.

Wholly cow, this isn't fair. Some of us are on diets.

Yes, it does sound good.

Sorry Uwinv Dawi, Anytime "Oil & Fried" is in the recipe it no longer becomes heart healthy.:(
But when Powwow season rolls around again I won't deprive myself completely.
It takes a helluva lot of work to shed the 3,600 calories that make a pound of fat so it's just easier to not eat the calories to begin with.:grumpy:

But thanks for the recipe anyway.  :D

I hear you Yvsa. I broke down today (I'm weak sometimes) and got Taco Bell for lunch. Bad mistake. My body has acclimated itself to spiniach salads and turkey breast... it didn't know how to handle greasy, fatty food  :barf: .

Hopefully things will calm down before tomorrow morning's job interview  :p :D

I normally cook my fry bread in Crisco, with a little bacon grease added if I have any. I have no doubt that canola is a healthier choice but before I plunk down the cash for a jug of it, how does the flavor compare?

I wonder how this stuff cooks in olive oil?

I think I know what you went through. One time about a decade ago I was in the habit of eating primarily rice for over a week, and then one day I went and got a large poutine from a local fast food joint. For those of you unfamiliar with poutine, it was invented by French Canadians as a pleasurable form of suicide. It consists of french fries covered in cheese curds and gravy. Needless to say, my stomach was QUITE unaccustomed to that amount of fat in a single meal at that point!

ay qh, Edutsi (my apologies). I wasn't trying to sidetrack anyone. I was thinking of the ingredients, not how it was cooked. Very good point.

I'm trying to loose some weight too. I'm looking to the Old Ways, the food we used to eat and the lives that we lived. I believe that the Medicine Wheel applies to diet. We have to live in balance, balancing physical, emotional, mental and spiritual parts of ourselves. If we get off kilter, then we may eat more to make up for our loss of balance, instead of relying on the Great Spirit and 7. Given that we are not perfect, we will inevitably fall off our path from time to time, but must regain footing and keep going.

Canola and for that matter a light Olive oil is essentially flavorless but Canola has quite a high smoke point so there is less worry about smoking up the kitchen than there is with olive oil.
