HF 1x30 and leather belt question

Hello,
New user here. I am very experienced in sharpening, have a variety of stones and systems.

I use HF 1x30 with a very coarse belt only for rough reprofiling. I also have a leather belt and various compounds.

I am wondering how safe is it to use leather belt with or without compound as a last step in sharpening a knife. Will it overheat the edge? 1 or 2 light passes per side?

Thank you.

It might. That depends on you. I never did. It's a fast process even if you go very slow. So what's the rush? It will be done in a minute and a half anyway. Some will say their brother in law killed his knives using one. But maybe their brother in law can't put a nail in a piece of wood without giving himself a concussion. Up to you. With reasonable caution especially the first time you should have zero issues imo..

I have never been able to get a knife as sharp and clean looking as when I use my 1x30 with a leather belt and compound.

as long as you're checking your edge for heat it should be fine.

It will overheat the edge but I don’t know if it’s the leather belt or abrasive belt. I had soft edges on 2 carbon steel knives and had damage after use. It didn’t seem to be an issue when used to sharpen some home made High Speed Steel knives. However these knives were not subjected to the same uses that the larger carbon steel blades were. The larger carbon steel knives were used to trim brush and limb small branches.
