Did you get one yet? Thats something that's next on my list, for that price i wonder how accurate it is.
I looked for it on the HF site and it said not available.

My wife is going to kill me......I'm heading to HF today to buy a grinder and a belt sander.

The hf order-over-the-web site doesn't show it. It only shows up in h***usa.com site - so I reckon it is an item exclusive to stores, at
least for now.

I'd call in to see if they have it.

About accuracy - this thing should be within few degrees. From the description it looks a K-type TC is included. Not sure about insulation,
but it IS rated to 2000F

I don't have it ... my home-made oven has a K-type TC and PID controller, so I don't quite need it. I still would want
to get it - for my tempering oven. I don't quite trust that dial

:D And to gloat :D - in about a month they are opening HF store minutes from where I live !

It will be really convenient for Northern NJ, NYC & burbs. For now, the closest
one is 70m OW out, in Brick NJ

Looks like I'll be making a road trip sometime next week! Thanks for the tip!

Thanks Rashid
I promised to take my wife to Tallahassee Monday for her birthday. HF has just opened a store there WOOT!!!!

I hope Harbor Freight never opens a store in my State. I can't stand paying sales taxes and if they don't collect them then.....ah you can figure it out. :)

Keep em sharp.

I bought on of these today..the accuracy is stated as

plus or minus 4 degrees F from -58F to 32 F

plus or minus .5% of the reading + 2 degrees F from 32 F to 2000 F.

The unit has a one year warranty. Its a nice looking instrument with a large LCD display.

I picked one up yesterday to check it out.It reads a little off of my good unit, but close enough. The probe is not much, but you can always stick it in a piece of small stainless tubing,or just change it to a better probe.Ebay has lots of cheap stainless type K probes.
Still,it seems like a good unit for the money.Certainly will be great for toaster ovens in tempering, and for checking the quench oil temperature.I haven't put it in the forge yet to see how it does at 1500F

HF will owe me one for free, with all of u fine folx buying them :)

The accuracy of this type of meters should up there. The physics is based on a junction of 2 dissimilar metals generating voltage differential that depends on the temperature of the junction. And that temp-to-voltage function is very precise and repeatable. All you need @ that point is to convert that voltage to temperature - el cheapo Analog-to-Digital chip (ADC), lookup table and display, PIC-like glue logic. And to show just how cheaply this can be done, HF sells one for $26 ... minus 20% off coupon ...

Thats true, basically a pyrometer is a thermocouple and a multimeter. But all there is to making knives is getting some metal hot and hitting it with a hammer, then sticking it in a bucket of water- right?
Electronics out of China is improving, but in a lot of inexpensive measurement devises the cost savings is in the balance and accuracy circuitry, not the measurement circuit.Without some varistors and thermistors a temp circuit can read off by a good bit, especially in a forge area.
All that said, this unit still seems to be a good deal.

I am was going to HF near me to buy an angle grinder to cut steel to rough shape so I may as well get the meter while I am there. thanks for the heads up.

Iv'e had one for about a year and am perfectly happy with it. the probe won't work inside of a H/T oven at 1500 deg. The insulation is only good to to about 600 deg. so you will have to get a decent thermocouple. I use the original one in my tempering oven.

Geez, I should have read that earlier! I took a drive to Montgomery yesterday and got one of these. I almost destroyed it within a few minutes of getting it home! I got it out of the oven in time though. Can someone post a picture or link to one of the probes I could use for higher temps? Thanks!
