Anybody used one? I got the new HF flyer today and they have them on sale for $99. I'm usually not a HF tool guy, but how hard can it be to make a disk grinder? The only thing that seems off is that it's a 12" disk. How hard would finding abrasives for it? Don't most folks use a 9" disk?

Thanks for any info!

My father has a 12" disk, not sure if it's HF though. He seems to like it fairly well. I have a 9" disk, but wished I had a 12. Seems like when go to flatten handle material, the extra surface area would be a benefit. I don't think you'd have a problem finding abrasives for it, it's a pretty common size. How wrong can you go for $99. Good luck! -Matt-

I have one of these and use it to flatten the micarta pieces that I make. I would be lost without it. For the money it is a great tool.

i have never used a disk grinder, i have looked closely at this machine in the store and it looks well made and durable-besides flattening handle material
and possibly tapering tangs what else can this type of grinder benifit you?
dovetailing bolsters? thanks bb

Actually, 12 is a very common size outside of the knifemaking game...lol. I unfortunately bought a 10, so i had to goto McMaster-
Carr to find a good slection of discs....Tru Grit had precisely 2:grumpy:

Actually disc grinders are quite usefull. They can be used for doing flat grinds, as I have done many this way as well as flatening handle materials.I have one small one with a table I use for dovetailing and smaller items.Mine get alot of use.

Joe, try Klingspore, they will take care of you.

I had one of those things some years ago. It is sturdy and I didn't have trouble locating 12-inch discs.
I did, however, find it somewhat too weak (The motor was marked 1 hp back then, but I seriously doubt that was accurate). I think they're using a different motor now.

Thanks for the feedback folks! My thoughts as far as use on this one are for flattening things and dovetailing things. It would be nice to have variable speed, but as long as the frame is sturdy I can upgrade the motor at a later date and still be ahead of the came $$-wise I think.

Now, anybody have any HF discount coupons? :)
