Hi Everybody,

I have been looking at all the pics of everyone's HG55 mil overruns and I noticed something about one of mine.

The groves on one of mine look way deeper than all the others I have seen ?

anyone else have this ?

:D

I think mine are like that. Where can I get one of those Aluminum Carabiner keychains in your picture?

deeper grooves or thinner coating? the features look less defined on the one, maybe the coating is thicker?

David, I have one like yours as well. I think it is partly a matter of coating thickness (and color), but I suspect maybe they were tweaking the program during production.

I have one out of several where the fuller is definitely wider than the others, and the fuller runs into the swedge in a perhaps inelegant way, which maybe is why it was changed after they already started production? I'll try for photos tonight to show what I mean.

I'll also note I have two distinct shades of tan handles too. They're paired on each knife, thank you Busse, but there's a light and a dark. In my sampling the handle color variations do not correspond with the different grinds.

Ok, I took a sec to snap a quick shot now. Here are the variations I have:

That's more than a difference in coating thickness. What looks to me like a French Border is wider in one than the other. I checked the two that I received yesterday, and both have the less pronounced grooves, in both directions.

Doink,
Sorry but Dave 22 is all out of those & not making any more. :( glad I have mine ;) Just went & hung out with him in his shop last night, he is one cool guy and a amazing self taught machinist. CNC wizard is not a stretch at all.

His day job is pretty impressive as well. ;)

I'mGatMan!; he did make both aluminum & Ti versions of the carabiners :)

Everybody else; It does appear to be partially coating but I think the overall grind is a bit deeper on the more pronounced ones,(I think the deeper ones look cooler :) )

Thanks for the pics & comments everybody

Groovy,

Far Out Man.

That's Deep, Really Deep.

That's about all I remember from the 60s.

When We said High School We meant it.

Sorry I just could not Resist the Straight line(Not that I could actually walk one)

Sorry to dig out an old thread but what is the purpose of the grooves on the BOSS HG55?

only cosmetic?
Can it cause any problems in real use?

thanks!

Looks a little like the untaped blade has a different edge angle , but the grooves are definetly more pronounced than the one I own

I wonder if part of it is the life of the ball grinder on the cnc machine. As the ball grinds more blanks, it gets worn out and cuts less defined lines, less deep lines?

combine that with different coating thicknesses and you get varying grind depths.

Is the blade thickness the same as others or thicker? Thicker stock could result in deeper grooves after milling.
