Hi Guys,

I have an HG55 LE that hasn't seen the light of day in a couple years. I think that the super thick edge has kept me from trying it out as it doesn't seem to be a slicer at all. It is modestly sharp, but sooo thick.

Has anybody had an HG55 LE modified, thinned out or even hollow ground?

Thanks,

Bravo

I have not, but I do highly recommend norcalblacktail for Busse knife mods. There are several threads featuring his work in this forum.

I just emailed Busse and asked if they could sharpen and thin the edge of my NMFBMLE, and they said "Yes, write down what you want us to do... we can thin the edge for no additional charge." They sharpen for free... (just pay shipping)

Are there any concerns that a considerable thinning or modification of the blade will cause enough heat to affect temper or HT?

It is an LE, to be honest, I think that's a beautiful knife and would leave it exactly as it is if I was you.

He probably wants to use it. I thinned the edge of my hg55 and it made it a helluva slicer. Way more capable in my opinion.

If done properly by someone experienced and skilled, like Busse or some of the reputable forum members here, its not a concern. Like I said, send it to Busse. Its free and wont void the waranty

Do you have any pictures? What do you use it for now, cutting food?

Yep, it cuts food well. I have also split wood, chopped, made fuzz sticks, etc. The original edge of the HG55 is so thick that even after thinning it as I have there is still plenty of steel behind the edge.
