Hi again!
I was at a local antiques store and for a whopping $1.75 I found these two knives with bizarre patterning and no history attached to them. The woman working there told me that they were very old, but knew nothing else. They remind me of old Damascus, but I can't tell, I don't have the eye for it (I'm new at this). Anyone know what is going on with these blades? Anything would be appreciated, Thanks!

I can't say I know whats going on with those blades for sure, mostly it looks like plain O'l rust to me. There does seem to be some deep etching there though. When I was a kid I had a knife a lot like that. I ran it over a butchers steel for a few minutes at it made the best steak knife (functionally) that I have ever seen. Nice find!

I don't know anything about them, but those would make some pretty sweet looking table knives if you clean them up.

eman13, i would love to check thoes knives out in person if you ever make it down this way. you might want to post them over in bernard levines forum. he could tell you about them i bet.

I was directed here by some other members, there are no legible markings (there is a microscopic area where an A.E. and a worn off symbol is stamped in the handle), but what I really want to know is what is causing that patterning in the metal, anything you know will help, thank you!

Thanks for the comments! oh, and BTW I went ahead and posted in Bernard's forum area, we'll see what those blades turn out to be.

Perhaps a table knife that is losing it's silver (chrome) plate.

It could be that they are losing their chrome platting in the pattern shown there, or it could be that they are damascus steel butter/steak knives. I have no idea which without having them in hand, or being able to find some marking on them identifying who made them.

I was tinkering with them today and found an insignia on the handle, the picture is crappy because it was taken through a jewelers loop. The initials A.E. are visible, part of a name, and a partial symbol. Anyone recognize it?
