Just curious as to where HI was 15yrs ago, lets say before the internet hype was so prevalent. or other manufacturers for that matter, especially those out of the U.S.

Interesting to me, there use to be a time before the internet where blades as such were frowned upon let alone purchased for any amount, to say the least.

With that said, having purchased some HI and others, I will say that in ACTUAL use they actually hold up rather well, as they should considering the bulk.. contrary to popular belief some time ago? with some manufacturers we're still uncertain about, without the vast internet hype..

Where was HI 15yrs ago? Was it under another, or simply not sought after by the vast internet community ,or just an inner cultural thing?

Just curious.. that's all.. school me..

paper ads in various magazines and such. there are scans of those floating around. i think i even have a few of those older magazines with some ads.

very simple ads too compared to the high marketing volume of other companies, but they worked. quite well.

15 years ago?....Hmmm, before my time, but i'll see if i can answer your question.

in 1995, H.I. was still in it's formative years somewhat. UB was doing the same things he has done here, but was doing them on knifeforums.
Khukuri were not a very well known blade outside of certain circles back then.
Although there is no way to actually prove this.... Thru tenacious marketing and outstanding product, customer service and friendliness, Auntie and Uncle brought khukuri's to the attention of the western world and opened up the market not only for other khukuri manufacturers, but for the knife industry as a whole. As years went by, the khukuri became more and more noticable on the market and H.I ended up here at bladeforums.

I first contacted U.B. and Yangdu right after the Blade magazine article featuring the An g Khola kurkri. They were just staring up then. I sent a letter to U.B. and recieved back a envelope of polaroid pics of available knives.

While I didn't purchase a Kukri at that time, H.I. was first on my list a few years later.

I can't remember what year that was.

Interesting...

I was in a used book store last week and found an old '82 or so SoF magazine and in it was a spyderco ad, I'll research after this post but am I to assume they started making sharpening systems before knives...

yes, even before we made flint knives, the tools to flake the edges sharp exisited ;)

making an 18 in. flint khukuri was a trip! ;)

Yes, Spyderco started out selling sharpeners/ceramics. They also kicked off the pocket clip. I made beer money in Korea (93-4) sharpening knives for buddies in my company/battalion with a Lansky and one of Spyderco's two sided 1x5 ceramic files. Also picked up my first folder with clip (integral FRN part of the scale back then) at the PX, either right before or right after the infamous Turtle Farm. Lost it in-processing at Lewis when I rotated back to the states, I hope someone on the way back to the ROK found it...

Love the pressure flaking pic! That you? On my list , but I never seem to get around to learning how (I can tell my wife doesn't think I have enough cuts on my hands, despite the eye rolling, every time she catches me with a fresh nick).
