The Real Thing. Probably pretty familiar to most of you but for me it's my first serious fixed blade. I won't be able to take it out too much -urban area with overtly strict no-knife-enforcement- but just owning it would serve me just fine.

I can't wait! But I'll have to! I just received a message my order will be shipped within 10 days or so. Plus another week from then...

This will be my fifth knife this year. There's no stopping me now...:D

Yo peter! welcome!
you only bought 5 knives this year?
i bought more than 15 so far, and i just started this
august, though i'm almost broke now:(
SOG Bowie huh? one of the priority knife on my list.
I'll try to get the Trident first.
man the thickness of the blade make me drooling :p
no carrying knife in Holand? i'm carrying a bunch of
knifes with me everyday, although i have no idea if there's
any restriction in WA state. maybe Mr. Ron can fill me in here:D

Welcome to the forum!

I have a SOG Bowie and it is awesome! To bad you can't take it out with you.:( Here in America we can carry knives and even Guns that is one reason this is the best country in the world! Not to rub it in!;) Enjoy your new knife, you won't be sorry you got her!:)

Hi Guys,

Peter: You will certainly like your SOG Bowie. It is a very serious and beautiful knife.

Lohango: Knife laws in the US are generally pretty loose. States and cities will have further laws in addition to federal laws. In Washington (not a legal interpretation here, only my personal, informal interpretation), switchblades are out (period); concealed carry of knives are restricted to blades of a maximum of about 3-3.75" (depending where); zero concealment of daggers of any length; and, if I understand it correctly, there are no restrictions of blade length or carry of daggers of any length if not concealed. But in metropolitan areas, it is wise to use prudency.

Skag: Good to have you around :)

...and found a lot of excellent comments on the Bowie.

One very interesting note by Ron was, not to leave the blade in the sheath for too long. A good thing to remember; I do realize the steel used in the Bowie will rust unless well-cared for.

I did however read one or two less favorable posts on the fit of SOG leather sheats in general. Does anyone have any owner's-input on this...? I most likely won't use the knife in real-life conditions, but am interested anyway. I've seen a few good pics of the sheath and it at least LOOKS more than decent. I'll have to be patient for at least some two, three more weeks before I can judge for myself...!

Hi Peter, My bowie sheath is made well and will hold up in normal field use. If you will be getting it wet it could rot and I think the handle is protected from rotting caused from moisture.

Ron, do you know how long the leather handle will resist rotting if you use the knife every day? Should you apply any kind of leather protecter on it? I do not use mine because my wife gave it to me and had the blade engraved for me and it is a prised posession but if I had to go to war or leave for a while my bowie will be coming with me!!!

...and somebody here in Rotterdam will pay too much for it...

It won't be me! I just saw a Bowie for the equivalent of -grab your armrests- $400 in a dumpstore! Holy Cow... I got it for a tad more than half of that. I'm SO greatful for USA-e-retailers... :D
But man, did it look great. The first time I saw it in person.

Thanks for getting bored... And I don't even have the blade! Imagine the stream of posts I'll bomb you guys with when it has arrived...

I actually had two SOG Bowies and I lost the 1st one in a camping trip. I'm not sure how but when I unpacked the truck it was gone!:( If you use the knife the gun blued blade will scratch very easily so be prepaired for this! It will only change the way it looks but the high performance will always be there!:) I like to look at the bowie as a sharpened pry bar! It is very thick and I doubt if you could ever break that blade! The only thing thicker I've seen is a Himalayan Imports khukuri but those are massive knives to begin with, without a doubt the best choppers on the planet!

I like my Trident, essentially an AUS8 Bowie with Micarta handle.
I would be careful about using it as a "sharpened prybar". The tip can break when prying, and that would not be covered under warranty. Apart from that, it is a serious knife, graceful grinds and lots of backbone.
You'll enjoy it.

You would need to be a little careful with the tip but even if it snaped off it would probibly snap not more than 1/8 or a little more because of how thick the blade gets from there. That would be an easy fix also and the tip would not break again because it would now be thicker. SOG does have a good warranty, better than Cold Steel and others(5 years) but when you are in the field camping or on a military mission and you have a task at hand that calls for prying, chopping, digging or what ever it might be you need a knife that will perform that task and not fail. If a soldier or anyone is in a life or death situation they will use their knife anyway they have to to live and they won't be thinking "will I void my warranty". so don't worry about voiding the warranty because you don't want a knife that needs a warranty to back it, you want a knife that is already "built to take it" and won't let you down because warrantys don't help you in the field.

The SOG Bowie is a knife that is "built to take it". I would not hesitate to use this knife in any situation in the field! I would also not hesitate to use most of SOG's other knives in a life or death situation as well. I have owned a lot of knives over the years and SOG makes some of the best out there!! They are also dead on with their heat treating. For example their 440A will outcut all other 440A I've used.

To sum it up SOG is one of the best knives at any price!!:)

Bobby, the Trident is also a great knife maybe even better than the bowie. Try some steel wool on the handle, it gives it a much better grip when wet and it looks pretty cool too!:)

Chris,

I may just try the steel wool trick. I will probably also deepen the fingergrooves a little too.

As for the warranty, you are right, it is probably one of the most solid knives I have ever handled. For chopping though, I would prefer my Scuba/Demo. Hollow ground is not ideal for chopping, since it can bind. Again, if you are out in the woods, with only one knife... - shame on you!!!... but use what you have.

I like the Trident a little better just because of the stainless factor. I like the looks of the Bowie leather handle.

Imagine, if you will, a BG-42 Trident, Boron Carbide coated, with the stacked leather handle, and deeper finger grooves:D  :p

What a SOG tribute that would make...
SOG Blackworks???

Bobby, how do you plan to deepen the finger grooves on your Trident? I think I will try this too. I might try to do it with my dremal tool.

I will probably end up using my Dremel tool as well. I intend to start with a small fine file, then sand down. This is under the assumption as someone said to me once:

"When in doubt, power tools allow you to make bigger mistakes faster..."

Ron, any thoughts from your Blackworks tech dept???
Rob

So Peter, did you get it yet!!!?

Nah... Still biting my nails.

I ordered from the Knifecenter and they just don't have the thing in stock. In their confirmation-e-mail they already stated to ship in 7 to 10 days; I'll cut them some slack... Previous experience with them has been excellent.

I'll sure let ya know! :D
