Hi everyone!

I come to this forum after buying (at last) what has already become my favourite knife :

i'm very impressed with my sebenza, especially with it's toughness

i have a question for you sebenzanistas :

has anyone used his/her sebbie in salt water or near the sea? what is the level of rust resistance of CPM S30V?

But it'll do in a pinch. My small Seb's been snorkeling a few times in the Caymans, but usually for only up to 2-3 hours at a time, then rinsed thoroughly with freshwater and dried thoroughly with a towel. I disassembled, cleaned, and lubed it every 3 days with a "care kit" that I'd put together consisting of an old toothbrush, a small vial of Militec-1, and of course the Allen key.

In the short time exposed, the only oxidation I noticed was once when I inadvertantly allowed the seawater to dry on the blade. A few, small, rust-colored dots appeared on the blade which wiped right off later with the Militec-1 and a paper towel.

Longer-term exposure, however, may cause more pronounced oxidation. My only fear would be developing it underneath the thumblugs, which is the only place I cannot get to it to remove it.

Still, as long as you're prepared to rinse it in freshwater/dry thoroughly in the interims of a disassembly/cleaning/lubing, the Seb works around seawater and below.

Considering the construction (other than the stonewashed S30V blade, which may actually trap moisture moreso than a satin finish) of titanium and highly-stainless 303, if someone were to coat their blade with one of the better coatings out there, I think you'd have a folder ideal for seawater exposure. Just my .02.

Professor.

thanks for your answer  . if snorkeling with it is OK with a good care of the knife, it's sufficient for me (i don't intend to use my seb as a diving knife, i've got specific ones for that in H1 :D )

Hi Erispoë, welcome to the forum, living in Nimes you better have put the question, you're close to the sea.
Very good choice, enjoy it, and i advise you that the tentation is strong to own others Sebbies :D
Salut
