Hi!

I was wondering how long it takes for a Khukri (a common one like the Ang Khola) to be sent from HI. Also I was wondering what your experience was with the support from HI, e.g. how long does it take to get an email reply.

I figure that HI has some khukris in stock, or do they start to make them when ordered?

HI has some (seemingly quite a bit) in stock.

When Yangdu is home, the longest I've waited for emails is 4 hours (not counting overnighters).

If you email early enough she ships the same day, otherwise it'll go out the next day. She ships USPS Priority unless otherwise requested. I don't think it's ever taken more than 3 days to get a knife, and that was over a holiday weekend.

Welcome to the forums, Instant! And in particular to the Cantina. :) The above link should give you some idea of HI's customer service and support. Legendary comes to mind.

Yangdu is out-of-country right now, (visiting the shop where our khukris are made) so you are not likely to get any response until she returns.

When she is around, as the good Cpl. said, she is very attentive and efficient. Since I have had enough of PayPal, I sometimes send payment in the form of Postal Money Orders when I am buying a DOTD. Sometimes it takes a couple of days before I can get to the Post Office, and I have had my purchase arrive before I even sent payment -twice.

It is my guess that the Khuks are shipped from Nepal in bulk for economy's sake, so there are usually quite a few on hand from which to choose. If what you want isn't available, Yangdu will make sure it becomes so as quickly as possible, but the turn-around time is closer to that of many custom makers.

Welcome welcome welcome:)

Like the others have stated, if you get your order in on time, then Yangdu usually gets it out the same day. I live in Indiana, and Yangdu lives and ships out of Reno NV. It's usually no more than 3 days from order to delivery. Obviously, delivery in the CONUS is much much quicker than overseas orders. However, I have heard that some of our mates down under receive their knives much quicker than one might imagine given the distance and getting through customs.

If you aren't particular, you can order directly off the HI site. However, if you want a 15" 28oz Ang Khola with a wood handle made by Bura (or some such specific request), then shooting Yangdu a direct email with your information and what you are looking for is a much better idea. Please keep in mind that she is Nepal for another few weeks, and email to Yangdu is spotty at best until she gets home. She's on a month long visit to check up on the shop as well as visit with family and friends. Actually, it's quite an exciting time. Usually we see a lot of really cool stuff spring up after these little visits:D

Once again, welcome to the Cantina!

Hi, Instant. I'm kinda minding the shop while Yangdu is in Nepal. I have a very limited selection of khuks, but I do have some AKs here. You can email me at tedwilson@mac.com

I'll get back to you as soon as possible, but I just got a promotion at work and will be in training for the next couple weeks, so will have limited access to email during the day. Let me know what you want and I'll see if I have it on hand, otherwise Yangdu will take care of you when she returns.

Just to add more positive....
REALLY fast. ALmost too fast for comfort :) Makes me want more.

I recently paid for an item on Saturday and got it monday morning.

Some old timers, with proven track records, have gotten khuks delivered before they sent the money.

Kind of like being in a gentle neighborhood, waay back when.

...... Not Always Fast. I've waited more than a week on occasions to get my knives. Then again, I'm in Canada so it has to clear customs and such. Things might also be slower as Yangdu is presently in Nepal.

When things are running like a well-oiled machine, the email replies are very fast, the shipping is fsat depending where you live, and the customer support is un-surpassed.

Welcome Instant.

I'm one of the lucky Aussie's who have received a Khukuri's from Yangdu in Nevada to my front door in 5 and 6 days respectively!

If there is better quality or quicker service than HI's, I have yet to find it!!!

Four days is the usual length of time for me to receive my items from Yangdu's Shed of Wonders, but I've had a couple arrive in three days.

I'm in Ohio, the Shed of Wonders is in Nevada.

Wow, I didn't expect so many answers in such a short time. Awesome, and thanks for the warm welcome too.

Shortly after posting the message, I saw the notice on the website saying that the store is closed while Yangdu is away.

Since I have some more time to make my choice, I'm going to take the opportunity to ask some more questions:

I ordered an 15" Ang Khola, is there something you would recommend I'd specify, like a certain kami?

Also, I ordered it with a horn handle (finding it prettier) but I'm thinking to maybe change it to wood. What's the best material considering that I'm going to use the AK quite extensively?

Cheers to everybody!

In all honesty, I would just try out whatever kami Yangdu sends you. They are all great:) Obviously people tend to find a kami that they prefer given the choice, but that takes a couple of blades to figure out:D If you are anything like the rest of us, you won't stop at just "a couple";)

The horn handle is pretty, indeed. Just keep in mind that it tends to be a little more slippery when your hands are wet...at least that is the case for me. However, if this is a user, taking a little 600 grit sandpaper and scuffing the horn will give you more purchase. The other thing to remember about either handle material is to keep it treated from time to time. Both horn and wood may develop small cracks (purely cosmetic for the most part). However keep the wood treated with a bit of oil or applying a finishing sealant goes a long way. The horn can be wiped down with mineral oil or hooflex (found at feed stores that cater to horses).

My personal preference for handle material is wood. i find that I can modify the grip easier. That's just me:) Whatever you get, I'm sure it won't be your last:D Once again, Welcome to the Cantina!:D:thumbup:

If you order from the store, you probably get whatever she sends you, although you can ask. I've got a few kukris that are identical models from different kamis. There are differences, and some a re neat, but they'll functionally do the same thing. I wouldn't worry about kamis. You might develop a preference after you own a few, and you might not.

When I ordered my first, I asked Yangdu which is better. She said for a user, that wood will hold up better.

Welcome Instant! :) My first Khukuri was a horn handled 15" AK and it has served me well for 7 years. It's handle is very oval in shape and large which I like. BTW it weighs in around 28 to 30 onces and has a 1/2" spine. It limbs trees almost as good as your average 18" AK.

As far as which handle material is better, I don't have a preference per say. I like the wood ones because they are easier for me to customize and I have worked a few over. But the Horn seems to hold up to abuse a little better for me. Handle material isn't so important to me though I'm into pairing knives and guns together that match looks wise or for the intended activities IE Revolver, Lever gun and Bowie for cowboy stuff and so on. Or a wood handled Sirupati to go with my Marlin 1894C .357 Magnum cause the stock matches the handle on the Khukuri. But when I'm not trying to match up guns and knives I'll take what ever catches my eye or Yangdu has in stock.

Good luck with you desision. Again, I don't thnk you can go wrong either way. Get one of each maybe then deside?
