Hi I just joined. I have a small knife collection and want to ask some questions. First What do you feel about Syderco lockbacks? I saw a good deal on a delica. I don't remember which model did realize there are so many. Only thing that stopped me was that it is a lock back. I havent bought a lock back in years. i like liners and frame locks. You don't see as many lock backs made. Are lockbacks perfered over liners for their strenth? Should i look for a frame lock Spyderco instead?

I love lockbacks. They may be dated but they're very strong. I actually really like my axis lock. So Axis, Lockback then Liner then frame then slipjoint. But slipjoints are in their own seperate class cuz i love them too and don't really expect much locking ability out of them... A guy I used to work with gave me his old delica, reaaaaal old, and i took all the serrations off and put a plain edge on for him. That lockback was pretty strong. Not as strong as my Buck 110, but strong. BTW, i've noticed the 110 copied a lot... Kershaw Wildcat Ridge, A schrade model. Weird.

Welcome to BladeForums. :)

Spyderco lockbacks are excellent---they are inherently reliable and lock up like a bank vault. The Delica is an excellent knife, a wonderful EDC (Every Day Carry). If you have the funds, I might recommend the G10 model with the fully flat ground blade; if you're looking for something more economical, any model is an excellent choice for everyday chores.

I have a host of different types of locks in my collection, including all that you mentioned---the lockback, the liner lock, the frame lock, and the more innovative locks of our time like the Axis lock, compression lock, etc.

Liner locks are more prevalent, I believe, because they're more economical to design and manufacture. They're a simple lock design. Most of the five-dollar-bin Chinese knives feature these because they're a one-piece design simple to manufacture to bad tolerances. They can be excellent locks, when made to precise tolerances like the locks on the Spyderco Military and such. With all the lockbacks pieces, springs, fittings, etc., it's simply more of a cost to mass produce---that's why liners are very common nowadays.

Get a Delica, or any lockback Spyderco, and you will certainly not regret it.

If it's on a Spyderco, it's there for a good reason! Spyderco's lockbacks are great... but their compression locks, liner locks, ball locks and integral locks are all great too. Do yourself a favor... and just get the pattern that interests you... all Spyderco's locking mechanisms are "all good, just different."

I used to consider the lockbacks on Spydercos as kind of weird, especially in contrast to the easy-opening hole that they are famous for. Then I saw some videos of people closing them one-handed and very easily on YouTube and right now I'm simply trying to decide between getting a Native or a Delica first.

the only lockback knives i own are a spyderco police 3 and a rookie.

both have fantastic lock up, and i can close both easily one handed. i am particularly fond of the p3.

There is nothing wrong with a good lockback, especially from Spyderco, my all time favorite EDC is the Endura.

Delica's good (my first Spydie, as it was for many others I'm sure), Endura's also good. My all-time favorite Spyderco is my Paramilitary, modified for tip-up carry. You should check them out. Run about $100-120, but well worth the investment. I'm wanting one in D2 right now.

The Delica is an excellent EDC knife. I have a all stainless Delica 4 for my personal EDC. The backlock works well and is reliable.

I had reservations about that too before I played with the Delica 4 - immediatly I had to buy it!

Spyderco makes their lockback's exceptionally well. I have a Chinook 3 that locks up with an amazingly crisp snap every time.

That being said, you also should check out their liner locks (really, they're amazing), compression lock (one of my favorites), BBL (ball bearing lock), and UKPK. :) Once you get a Spyderco, you really will have a hard time finding other knives that compare.

I got the names mixed up. Its a dragonfly they have 2 left in full serrated black plastic handle. I was going to buy them but couldn't find the "made in..." on the package I didn't want to pay too much if it was made in china knifecenter.com says they are made in Japan. They make good stuff. I might pick them up tomorrow.

But i bought the last CRKT H.U.G. $22. with tax

The Dragonfly is TINY! Just make sure you know you are looking at a tiny knife. IMHO the Delica is a better size but to each his own.

I like lockbacks.

But aside from that, if a knife is from Spyderco, it has a good lock no matter what the style.
Feel the same about Benchmade and Kershaw.

I generally don't trust lockbacks, due to some testing I've done on them, but the Spyderco lockbacks passed with flying colors and I do trust them! I have a Manix and a Chinook III. Be aware that (at least for my knives) the very strong spring that makes it so reliable also keeps the blade from opening as easily as a linerlock or framelock - which only matters if flicking your blade open all the time so it drives your wife nuts is what you like to do.

I know I do...
