Im new to this forum and new to knivemaking as well. Ive collected a few knives over the years, nothing special, and decided to give it a shot at making my own. I stumbled across this forum and it looked like a good place to start.
I know there are starter kits I can purchace, are some better than others?Could anyone give me advice on where to start?

Cheers,
scottr

Hi Scottr
Welcome to the Makers forum. Pull up a chair and stay awhile.
I think almost any knife kit is worthwhile for a beginner but you will soon get tired of working with someone elses design and make your own. Thats when the adventure begins. Enjoy!

Check out knifekits.com

You can do very basic fixed blades or the most ornate folders...it's all up to you.
They also have a forum where you can see others finished kits and ask for help on your projects.

And you can search this forum for a incredible wealth of info from some top makers.

Have fun and welcome to Bladeforums.

Welcome to Bladeforums. There are a lot of great guys and gals here,a lot of experience, too. A knife kit is a good start. Most all the suppliers carry them. I highly recommend getting two or three catalogs anyway (you will need to order stuff ,eventually). Texas Knife Supply, Jantz, K&G (knife and gun finishing supply),and Pop's are some good folks to deal with. Darren Ralph has a good kit and supply company, Knifekits, http://www.knifekit.com/store/s-pages/kk_store_1mainframe.htm?kk_store_productList_main.htm~smain .
At the top of this forum page is a couple of "stickies" (permanent threads),for new makers and finding suppliers. Read the getting started one well. There is a lot of frequently asked info there.
Think Safety, you don't want to start a new hobby and ruin your life.
Take your time, a kit is a good start, then start slowly and build your skills. You won't go from knife kit to sword maker in a week or two!
Expect failures, the only difference between surgeons and knifemakers is that we show off our mistakes,- but we both learn from them.
Learn to do a search on this forum, most newbie questions are asked about twenty times a year. The search tool is at the top of the page.
We can be grouchy, and we can be playful - sometimes it is hard to tell the difference - don't let us ruffle your feathers.
Do yourself, and us, a favor and fill out your profile. We can't answer many questions (Or offer to have you come over for help) if we don't know things like - where you live, how old you are, what kind of work you do/did.etc.

Again, welcome!
Stacy

Scott, if you live around me stop by my shop and we will give a jump start in the knife making arena.;) :D

Hi Scott :) Welcome to BF . The best place to start IMHO (as Stacy said too ) is at the top of this page . The very first sticky "for the newbie starting out" you'll find hours even days worth of reading & info..Next stop would be JANTZ , POPS , K & G , KNIFEKITS etc. for some materials. Be advised , spend a little time shopping and you can save a considerable amount of money by comparing prices ! I just had to restock a few things and I noticed Jantz http://www.jantzsupply.com/ has just put out a new catalog & it is full of new stuff. I don't do kits but I did notice that they had a very , very large selection of Blanks , at very good prices I might add  . Check out the search function at the top too , it can be your best friend when you have a question and need help NOW ! Next step would be to have fun and join in . I'm sure that you'll have something helpful to add ......most everyone does. I'll be see'in ya. Oh BTW , don't forget to fill out your profile buddy , at least the basics . Everyone here will appreciate it and you'll get more help......I Guarantee it ;) I wanted to add that these guys are really great to deal with too, http://www.trugrit.com/

Scott, wecome to BF..Indian George is just trying to get you to his place so that he can feed you his hotter than hell relish..you have been warned :D

Indian George,
I've noticed in many threads how generous you are with sharing your shop with knifemakers, both new and experienced. It is very refreshing to see your willingness to share our passion with others. Thank you!

P.S.
I wish I lived on that side of the country, just so that I could visit from time to time. Alas, I may need to talk my wife into an East Coast vacation. She'll probably want to go directly to Maine and back though.

When I started making knives there way none to show me how to make knives or Damascus. I just read allot of books and asking questions here. I told myself that I would always help anyone that maybe starting off.;)

Hi Scottr,
Read-do-learn. As IG stated, I went to the same school! Don't give up and have fun. It takes time and detirmination but worth it in the end.

My profile has been updated.:D
