hi every one,

I've being reading around the site and its amazing all the information here.
But straight to the point. What I'm looking for is a well made knife for general use, and belt carry around the woods. Now, I've been looking at a knife from boker called the "Arbolito Large Clip Point Hunter" heres a link to the page
http://www.sworddepot.com/Boker_Arbolito_Large_Clip_Point_Hunter_11_1_2_overall_pid31863.html

I have a pretty well rounded knowledge of knives, and their contents.
but I can only tell so much of a knife from looking at it on a site. I'm wondering if anybody here has used, or heard any thing good about it,
(btw I've had some trubble with the search engine, so forgive me if this has been covered in another post) also if anyone could sugest a knife, with hard looks and the sugested specs above, for under 300 dollars,(279 + tax).

thanks all,

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

The search engine can seem temperamental. Read this Sticky: Search Engine FAQs & Tips by Quiet Storm, and you should get better results.

But you won't find much on that Arbolito. It's not a common brand here and that much money for 440 (probably 440A) steel is excessive.

I guarantee you can get a better knife than that for half the money, or even a more elegant solution for well under $300. I will let the woodsmen and your fellow Canadians suggest specific knives. You might browse the high carbon blades from Cold Steel, Ontario, Becker, Ranger Knives, and Bark River. You could also look at the Scandinavian knives carried by www.ragweedforge.com

For that amount of money you can do so much better. The previous post is right on. If I were looking for that type of knife in that price range, I'd probably get a Bark River. Convex ground A2 tool steel. I have the White Huntsman, and it's a superb knife, although a little smaller than you're looking at.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Edited: I should add that I'm neither a woodsman nor a Canadian...

Hey Fonly...

Welcome Fellow Canajun...

I can be a little biased sometimes,, so I'll let everyone make their suggestions...

However I will throw a knife or two into the hat....

Fallkniven FI, SI, or as Esav suggested a Mora, or two or three..

You'll have enough left over for a few timbits and a large double double. (That's Canadian code for donut holes and a large coffee with 2 creams,2 sugars)... :)

Anyway Fonly,,again welcome and check out all of our different forums..There is a pretty good survival forum, I know you'd be interested in...

You'll find here the membership at BF.com know what they are talking about..

wow  , thanks for the hints guys, and yes that much for 440, is too much, the thing that caught my eye was the desgin.
I have heard many good things about bark river, unfortunatly i forgot about them until they were mentiond.

So with the information I have now I've come to three knives.
1. BRK&T North star
2. Ranger RD6
3. Fallkniven S1

Can anyone give me some person thoughts, and or experiences with one or more of these knives. they seem very promising.

and hey eric, yup 25 timbits and a doubble tripple hits the spot for me.

thanks for the comments everyone
Ben

Welcome to the forums Fonly,

I support the Bark River recommendations - wonderful knives. You might also want to look into a Grohmann. Aside from the fact that they're a quality Canadian brand, they are terrific belt knives. The No. 1 and the No. 4 are good for general use, camping, skinning, and such. Mine tend to spend a season in the woods and then migrate to the kitchen, where they make wonderful prep knives.

As for online ordering, I will recommend knifekits.com. They don't sell completed knives, but they do offer some terrific kits and parts, and their cross-border customer service is impeccable. Keep them in mind if you discover you have a desire to stray into knife making or modification.

All the best,

- Mike

PS forget the double double and spring for some Kicking Horse from BC. It may be more expensive, but at least it's coffee. Still not sure what Tim's sells ...

I like poking around on http://www.dlttradingcompany.com/ - extensive link of BRKT - I ordered a Barkie from them.

And http://www.knifeworks.com/ usually has some great deals on top shelf blades. Haven't done business with them but have only heard good things. Perhaps a Fallkniven A1 is what you are looking for? http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=779

Check out the forums and you'll see the most people who use their knives in the field prefer convex grinds - hence the popularity of Bark River and Fallkniven.

Bark River knives are most excellent! I own a couple myslef.
I also own a Ranger RD 6 and a custom RD 4.

Well thanks for the help guys, and the sites. I know you all know how much better it is to go into a store and fell the knife for your self. I think the direction i will go in, is with either bark river or a D.H. Russel,(grohamm)
I own a Large skinner from D.H. Russel, and I love it. I like the more traditional look, so this path is the right on for me.

again thanks for the help

Ben

I like that Buck....But still, I believe you can get a better knife for the money. Look at the Swamp Rat knives or the Rangers. Those knives are great.

I'd even look into a Cold Steel Trailmaster, or a big Fallkniven fixed blade.

That's a great knife - but you're paying for the fact that it's a limited-production item. It's intended as a collector - not a user. As psycho78 points out, you could get a better knife for the money.
