Why the Kamis couldn't do some folders like tis :

F1187.jpg

Their name in France is "Piemontais" ou "Couteaux à Clou". They are very easy to build, and their handle can be made of steel, brass, silver, wood, horn... What's your opinion my friends?

Regards,

StephenSee.

It could be interesting, but I wonder if they could be talked into it.

Kinda small compared to what they usually make don't ya think. ;)

Folders would be very hard for these guys. They make a great knife; but, they can not hold the tolerance levels tight enough to produce a series of interlocking folder components.

I have the only folder to come out of BirGhorka thanks to Tsimi and his most gracious heart!!!! It was made by the master, Bura, and has Elk Antler slab handles on it.
The fit and finish is quite extraordinary considering the tools Bura used to make and assemble the folder.I was gonna post the stat's on it, but I'm too lazy and busy today to go and dig it outta its resting place.
Just let me say it's one huge sucker for a folder with the blade about 3/16 inch thick!!!!
It's a slipjoint, but I'm betting Bura could make a locking folder if he wanted to.

Maybe if I get it out later someone could post a couple of scans of it?
I haven't got around to renewing my gold member account as yet, like a lot of things it keeps getting pushed back in
priority. :(

I'm thinking there are some pix of it already in the forum if someone wants to go dig them out(?), that is if they were attached and not loaded on Photopoint or the other pix websites that have screwed things up in the last year.:(

5" handle
4&1/4" long blade
9&1/4" OAL opened
3&3/4" cutting edge
3/4" blade depth through belly
Clip point drop 1/4"
Clip length 1&1/8"
Slipjoint folder with very square tang only slightly rounded. Stong spring.
Brass bolsters and liners.
Elk horn handles.

I think Uncle saved the last one for me sincle I funrnished the antlers. They turned out too porous for any larger handles.

Sorry I can't send pictures.

That's right, Rusty. You actually were the priority recipient since you were the elk man.

There's a thread with a pix of one of these two folders and I think it's called Folder from Bura. I had it once and then lost it and that's where I got the pix link but the link didn't work. Story of my life.

When we let the kamis do what they do best, that's when they really shine. It especially shows when a surprise shows up like the one Pipey got a couple weeks ago, or the recent Dhankutas.

I'm no great fan of folders; but I don't think a folding 12" khuk would be impossible, by any means. There are precedents; consider some of the full-size folding Bowies that came out of Sheffield in the nineteenth century; or the huge nevajas (is that the right term?) from Spain and South America.

As to BirGhorkha being too low-tech to make them; the big Spanish folding knives were made with medieval technology. In fact, the (locking) nevaja is a basic Roman design.

Please remember that Uncle Bill stated Bura has made firearms. I think the kamis could make a fine folder ...if so motivated. However the accuracy and precision required would take longer to complete ...driving up production costs. Knowing the bargains we get on these pointy things anyway, HI would probably lose money on the entire affair :(

This is pretty close.

I think the only folder I have left is one my Dad made for me and I can't find that one. I'm not a folder fan, either.

That simple kind of folder stephensee introduced has many variations. Though it is such simple in construction, still it can take ethnic feeling like;
Old Japanese tanto utility folder

Old Japanese tactical(?) folder

In the site, I also found a Nepalese folder

Don't you think it is more than possible for HI to make a folder... unless we are too ambitious to have an HI AK folder.

There's a couple of guys in the shot capable of making folders besides Bura. There just isn't any demand for them.
