Hi all,

I am not sure if this has ever been ever answered here but please forgive my noobness (:)).

I am a chainsman, or put more simply a surveyors assistant. My job entails hiking to where ever i am told, be it swamp or snow.

I am looking for something to replace the slash hook i have to carry about, its a lot of weight which i would like to replace with a knife.

so I am thinking,
- Blade about a foot long (300mm)
-top heavy like a machete
-cheap ( I am good at losing stuff)
-durable ( I work between snow and desert so things don't tend to last.)
-easy to sharpen, using basic techniques.
-fit on my tool belt(!!)

Hopefully we can find something.

Cheers all
Craig.

Edit, Sorry about he language earlier.

Hi Craig please edit your post this is a family friendly forum.
Also I'd say the sog fari machete would work its like $20 bucks an can take a beating.

First off, really sorry about the language. I hope i did not offend anyone to much.

After writing my original post i have been looking around and i have thought a kukri style blade would fit what i have been for.
It has a heavy blade, good for hacking at thicker foliage.
It blade is quite wide so it could be used for digging.
They seem to be a long bladed knife.
But unfortunately the ones i do find are either extravagantly expensive or from the photos exceptionally poorly made.

Get there in the end
Craig,

I was pointed towards Tramontina machetes recently and all I can say is Wow! They are pretty great for the dirt cheap price. Helps to be able to re-grind the edge yourself because sometimes the edges on the Tramontinas are done a bit hastily by the factory.

Craig,

I think the cold steel kukri or the ka bar would be best.

Condor and cold steel also make inexpensive machetes, in lots of designs. CS makes 2 in the kukri pattern which are much cheaper than their regular kukris which are much heavier.

Welcome tonthe forums let people know what you wind up getting, given your level of use and abuse you could probably write a review before too long!

If you like the BK9 also take a look at the BK-4. It's the same size as the -9 but more of a kukri style blade. I have both, each is good at certain tasks, but 4 out of the 5 times I take the 9.

Just my $0.02

Thanks for the replies guys.
While I had my heart set on the kukri style blade I think that i will not be able to beat the price of the Tramontinas, unless you guys are taking the mickey, they seem to be what i am after.
My next question is does anyone know of an Australian distributor?

Thanks all,
Craig
